About Brook

Brook helps young people to make informed, active choices about their personal and sexual relationships so they can enjoy their sexuality without harm.

Brook services provide free and confidential sexual health information, contraception, pregnancy testing, advice and counselling, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and outreach and education work, reaching over 290,000 young people every year.

Becoming a Bigger, bolder, better Brook

Until 2011 Brook operated as a network of independent charities but we have now merged into a group of 17 subsidiary charities under a parent company. There are 13 centres in England and one each in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Jersey. We employ over 600 staff across the UK.

Education For Choice

Education For Choice (EFC) is a project of Brook and supports young people’s right to informed choice on abortion by: delivering workshops for young people; providing evidence-based information and resources; and training health and education professionals.

EFC calls for all young people to get accurate information and good quality education about abortion, and impartial support with pregnancy decision-making whoever they are, whoever they ask and wherever they go. Campaigns

Brook campaigns for sex and relationships education (SRE) to be fit for the 21st century through our Sex:Positive campaign. We know that young people want SRE that is relevant to their lives, focuses on relationships as well as sex, is honest about human sexuality and taught by professionals who are well prepared and confident. In partnership with FPA we also run the XES – We Can’t Go backwards campaign, launched in response to reports of restrictions to contraception and sexual health services across the UK. Brook and FPA are calling on people in the UK to join the campaign and rate and share their experiences of contraception and sexual health services, good and bad, through the interactive online sexual health map. Resources for professionals

Brook produces a range of widely used and respected publications to inform work and understanding of sexual health and sex and relationships education for use by nurses, GPs, teachers, parents, youth workers and young people themselves on a broad range of sexual health issues. Brook training, education and outreach services

Brook delivers high quality, affordable training for all professionals working with young people. Our expertise is developed from almost 50 years of experience working with young people and all our training is informed by their views and perspectives.

Job summary

To provide condom demonstrations, pregnancy testing, referral, and sexual health information to clients in a flexible, respectful and non-judgemental manner in accordance with Brook guidelines. To provide support to clients to enable them to make informed choices about their sexual and personal relationships and associated issues. To support young women when making decisions about unplanned pregnancy

Key accountabilities

·  To develop an understanding of the needs of young people and to assist with creating an appropriate atmosphere to enable clients to feel at ease using Brook services.

·  Register new clients aged under 16 ensuring that personal details, reason for visit, referral and action taken are accurately recorded using appropriate Brook procedures. Ensuring clear boundaries and explaining the Brook policy on protecting young people.

·  To provide support to clients to enable them to make informed choices about their sexual and personal relationships and associated issues.

·  Work sessions as part of a team with Receptionists, Doctors and Nurses.

·  Give information and advice to small groups of young people who may attend for information on sexual health, contraception or related issues including condom teaching in accordance with Brook policies.

·  To carry out pregnancy testing and STI testing as appropriate according to relevant protocols

·  Assess and refer clients to the Nurse or Doctor as and when appropriate.

·  Provide clients with condoms after appropriate discussions and condom demonstration

·  Assess and refer clients to other outside agencies/services in emergencies and where appropriate.

·  Prepare for service delivery, ensuring that the necessary leaflets, information sheets, condoms and paperwork are tidy, in order, well stocked and up to date.

·  Keep up-to-date with sexual health issues, current legislation involving young people and Brook guidelines and information.

·  Makes appointments for clients elsewhere (e.g. BPAS) as appropriate.

·  Attend on-going training as deemed necessary by Brook in order to fulfil the job description and requirements of the post.

·  Arrive in good time to start the session promptly and remain on duty until all clients have been dealt with.

·  Attend internal staff and supervision meetings.

·  To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

·  To work in an anti-discriminatory way with a diverse range of clients.

·  Undertake such duties not included in the job description as are reasonably requested by the post-holder’s Line Manager.

Person Specification

The successful applicant will have the following experience;

Essential

o  Supports the aims and work of Brook Centres

o  Maintains strict confidentiality concerning all Brook matters

o  Education to GSCE standard

o  Have attended a basic counselling skills course

o  Experience of working with young people

o  Ability to work both independently and co-operatively as part of a multi-disciplinary team

o  Good written and verbal communication skills

o  Communicate comfortably & coherently with young people and in matters relating to sexuality

o  Has keen interest in the welfare of young people and in their concerns

o  Ability to relate to young people and those who work with them

o  Ability to work under pressure
