APES Fourth Quarter Project 1: Book review

Due Thursday May 30

You will read a nonfiction book with some kind of environmental theme that you get from either the school library or the town library (you may choose to buy a book, but I encourage using library books…used is almost always better than new!). There is a suggested list to choose from posted on the website. If you choose a book that is not on my list, you must pre-approve it with me.

Format and content:

  • Standard 8x10 sheet of paper, folded like a book (see diagram below)

“landscape layout” “book style”

  • All information should be typed
  • Front cover should have the book title and author(s), with an illustration or illustrations showing the major theme or a particular topic from the book that stood out to you. You may NOT copy the cover of the actual book you read. Be creative here! If drawing is a daunting task, get resourceful...maybe make a collage from pictures in old magazines, maybe collage together photographs that you take. You may NOT use images from the internet.
  • On the inside you should include a synopsis (in your own words, no direct quotes) for the six chapters you consider the most important (contribute the most to the overall theme, give the most vital information, capture the essence of the book). These should be summarized in one paragraph per chapter. Each paragraph should be labeled with the chapter number.
  • On the back cover you will do two things:
  • Provide a summary of the book. This should be in your own words (ie it should not be what is on the back cover or inside sleeve of the book you read, it should not come from on-line reviews, etc. Remember, I am just as capable with Google as you are…)
  • Provide a review of the book. This is your opinion. Do you think the author(s) covered the material well? Did she/he/they make you passionate about the topic? Was it interesting? etc… Again, this should be in your own words, see my comment about googling above. At the end of your review you should put your name.

You will be graded on quality & content, aesthetics, and on the extent to which you followed the format.
