TIPS FOR WRITING STATEMENTS taken from the BABCP guidelines:

‘A SELF-STATEMENT provides the opportunity to make a full summary of the following information:

  • How the knowledge, skill and/or attitude was learned and acquired, for example where the training and/or experience was undertaken, through what trainings, in what work settings etc.
  • Briefly, whatknowledge and/or skill was learned or acquired
  • A critical appraisal of how this knowledge and/or skill applies to psychotherapeutic roles
  • Illustrative example/s of the application of the knowledge and/or skill which demonstrate some critical learning from the outcome’ (Please note these need to be specific examples and a minimum of two for each criteria)

COMMON PROBLEMS NOTED IN RECENT KSA PORTFOLIO SUBMISSIONS TO CONSIDER AND AVOID:

•Rather than list training and experience demonstrate understanding of the knowledge, skill or attitude through detailed discussion and application to practice.

•Demonstrate a breadth of knowledge, skills and experience within Mental Health through discussion within the statement.

This has been a particular problem with statement:

3 – Psychopathology and Diagnostic tools which needs to include detail on and understanding of diagnostic classifications and knowledge and application of a range of measurement tools including a broader range than IAPT standard measures.

4 – Models of therapy which needs to include a detailed understanding of at least 4 models and specific examples to illustrate application of each.

7- Communication with Service and Colleagues – broader than multidisciplinary teams in Mental Health and include Non Health Professionals

•Limited experience (PWP) rather than broader understanding and experience in Mental Health.

•Limited range of references (number and work experience) The countersignatures in 5-10 need to illustrate a range of work experience and the references in 11, 12 and 13 need to all be different and be from different work experiences this must include non PWP work in both countersignatures and references. To confirm this please clearly identify the workplace of the person countersigning or providing a reference, the working relationship and whilst in what role.

•General rather than specific illustrative examples in each statement and one rather than two examples for each.

•Ensure the portfolio is presented in an ordered file, clear labelling of statements, use of dividers, not having the statements in plastic wallets that can’t be read without taking them out of the file, references and appendices.

•Evidence clearly labelled and where it is identified (in the section with the statement or in appendices.

•Include a completed and signed criteria checklist at the beginning and Document list on the BABCP Paperwork before the appendices.

•Remember all statements and references need to be signed. This includes original signatures for each countersignature and references.
