Test your survival skills in French!

Please fill in this questionnaire – it should only take a minute or two. This will help us to put you in a group with others whose French is at about the same level. So please be honest!

Please note: this is a rough guide only, and you can easily move to another group if the allocated one doesn’t suit you.

En route to a medical conference, your plane has to ditch. Luckily, nobody is hurt but, inexplicably, you find yourself sharing a life-raft with an improbably attractive woman/man (delete as appropriate) who speaks French but no English.

While awaiting rescue, you strike up a conversation.

Please put 1-5 in each box (1 = very easy; 5 = very difficult) to show how you could cope with explaining or asking the following:

  • Your name, age and where you come from□
  • You are a doctor/medical student □
  • Your work or what you hope to do when qualified□
  • What you like most about France□
  • His/her ankle looks painful and needs an X-ray□
  • He/she will be back to ski-ing in no time□
  • Does he/she have any existing medical problems?□
  • Diabetes is the most interesting disease in the world□
  • It’s all because of global warming□
  • Explain medical training in the UK□
  • You wait 12 days for a rescue boat, then two come

along at the same time□
