Rain drowns Super

Challenge decision

HEAVY mid-afternoon North Shore rain last Wednesday caused the postponement of the last match in the 2012 Taylor Bowls NSW Lawn Bowls Super Challenge series between Double Bay and the host-club, North Sydney.

The match will now be played on Tuesday night with the winner to clash with Northmead for the championship and a share of the major prize money, and the loser to meet Belrose in the playoff for third and fourth prize purse on Wednesday evening at Belrose.

The weather did not affect the matches at Belrose last Wednesday, where Northmead defeated Belrose 9-2 and Harbord beat Dee Why 10-0.

MAJOR SINGLES REPLAY LIKELY The last eight in the club’s

2012 Major Singles title was decided at the weekend.

It has opened the way for a possible repeat of last year’s final when Matt Fetherston won the event

from Bernard Fridman. The draw has the pair in

opposite halves and can only clash in the final.

Little hope for 2012 Pennant kudos

AT the half-way stage of Zone 11’s 2012 Pennant competition Double Bay has only an outside chance of being among the championship teams.

Just one of the club’s six teams has a realistic expectation of challenging for a top

spot when the 10 home-and-away rounds are completed by the end of May.

At the moment, the club’s hopes rest with the Grade 2 side which has won three of four matches for a total of 16½ points, three behind table-toppers Eastlakes and four ahead of Clovelly. All Grade 2 clubs have the washed out third round fixtures to be played.

Last year, at the half-way mark, Double Bay was in a similar position. Then it was the Grade 1 team which had the best chance of collecting a pennant medal when it was holding down second spot to eventual winners Alexandria Erskineville. However, it finished third behind Kensington.

This year the Grade 1 side, has won one of its five matches and is one step from the league ladder’s bottom rung. It needs a turn-around of form in the second half of the competition to avoid relegation as, at this point, Waverley, Kensington and Greenlees

Park can gain more points from washed out fixtures.

Three of the club’s six pennant teams recorded wins in last Saturday’s fifth round. The Grade 1 side did not impress at Western Suburbs Leagues Suburbs League when

it went down 1-5 by a 11 shot aggregate (42-53). The lone win came from Gerald

Weinberg’s rink (Matt Fetherston, Arnold Javen and Brandon Conway) which won

19-14. The team lead 8-1 early, then had a bad patch to be down 8-10 on the 10th end, but won the 11th and was not headed from then on.

Jack Kampel’s side were leading 8-6 after seven ends, then lost six straight ends to fail 13-20. Ray Jankelowitz, who had brother, Harold, as his third, seldom looked comfortable and was in trouble near the halfway mark at 3-11, finally succumbing 10-

19.

The Grade 2 unit returned from Clovelly with a 5-1 (71-56) decision as Julian Engelmann’s side (Sid Glick, Alan Rosenberg and Sol Caganoff) scored by 26-10, and Werner Kos lead John Wineberg, Mark Sack and Phillip Joel to a comfortable 36-

10 win. The Les Brem, John Rosen, Michael Becker and Peter Levy rink battled before going down 20-22, as Levy completed the game with a badly torn hamstring.

In Grade 3 Double Bay won its second match by accounting at home for Coogee 5-

1 (74-60) as rinks skipped by Paul Brandon (with Bernie Garden, Louis Platus and Wayne Podger), and Leon Portrate (Sam Abrahams, Rob Hutchins and Barrie Brickman) each finished ahead by 19 shots.

Double Bay’s third win of the round came from the Grade 6 team which performed

well on home turf to take the honours from Maroubra RSL by 5½-½ (64-45). Top results were from Jerrold Jacobson’s rink (Alex Horwitz, Sam Terley, Gerry Cardash,) by 25-17 and by Mark Reisin (Neville New, Peter Herman and Meyer Toblib) 23-12, while Danny Cohen’s side (Laurie Cacciottolo, Bernie Hirst and Max Klein) tied the rink at 16-all.

Grade 4 lost 1-5 (52-64) at home to Maroubra as did the Grade 5 against Waverley

1-5 (52-65) when Maurice Boland’s side (Coen Williams, Rod Davies and Paul

Isenberg) gained the point with a 19-6 result.

Glick just misses to upset Major Singles title-holder DEFENDING champion, Matt Fetherston, squeezed into the 2012 Major Singles quarter-finals with a two-shot margin over the 2009 runner-up, Pepe Glick (pictured),

on Sunday.

It took Fetherston 37 ends to clinch the match 31-29 and he

had to make a mid-game comeback to overcome the tenacious Glick, who had outplayed him in the early ends.

Glick was ahead 16-6 after 13 ends when Fetherston staged

his revival to trail by one (18-17) by the 20th end and gradually evened at 20-all on the 24th.

By the 28th end Glick had regained the ascendancy to have the score at 25-22 and on the 31st stretched the lead to 27-24. By the 35th end Glick looked to have the measure of the title-holder with 29-26 on the score board.

However, on the following end, he was down three shots and resorted to a drive. His bowl hit the mark with the jack looking as if it would end in the ditch

to give him the shot and hold game. However, the jack crashed into a back bowl and moved sideways to the edge, just inside the peg with Fetherston retaining one of his three shots.

Fetherston thrived on the pressure and drew a second shot to have the score at

28-29. He continued to finish closest to the jack with three of his next four deliveries to edge into the Round of Eight by a thrilling 31-29 result.

The 2003 Major Singles champion, Harold Jankelowitz, was made to fight for every shot in his 31-26 decision over last year’s Minor Singles winner, Robert Clark.

Jankelowitz was behind 17-21 after the 19th end, but steadied to take shots from the next five ends and regain the advantage at 25-21. Clarke again hit the front 26-25, but lost the next two ends dropping a four on the 28th end to give Jankelowitz the match.

Another former Major Singles champion, Brandon Conway, who defeated James

Cook for the 2007 title, also had his work cut out to make the quarter-final when he overcame a strong challenge from Phillip Joel 31-28.

After being in command at 27-15 after 23 ends Conway lost his touch and allowed Joel to creep up to 27-25 on the 27th end. On the 30th end it was anyone’s game as Conway held sway at 29-28. He then scored singles on the next two ends for the match.

The eighth quarter-finalist, Rob Hutchins, had a drawn-out 43-end 31-28 win over the 2008 Minor Singles champion, Mark Sack. At the 23rd end it was 16-all; then Hutchins consolidated to lead 26-19 on the 34th. Sack fought back to 27-30 (42nd end), only to give away the shot and the match on the next end.

DRAW (quarter-final): B Fridman v Arnold Javen, R Hutchins v B Conway, H Jankelowitz v Michael Becker, M Fetherston v Gerald Weinberg.

Garden “blooms” on way to

2012 Minor Singles semi-final

BERNIE Garden, a two-time Minor Singles finalist, is an early favourite to claim the 2012 title, following his win over newcomer, David Newman, last week.

Garden (pictured right),who has been a Minor Singles

finalist in 2002 and 2007, defeated his rookie opponent 31-

29 after 30 ends and joins the list of semi-finalists.

Newman (left) kept in touch with

Garden and had the lead at 19-18 after

25 close ends, but Garden’s vast experience paved the way for a victory as he reeled off the following five ends for a14-shots collect.

In an earlier round, Garden was given a

hard time by Louis Platus, before taking the match 31-30 over 36 ends.

Platus, who excels at draw bowling, ran to a 23-18 lead

after 21 ends, only for Garden, who also has a smooth drawing ability, to respond with a collect of six shots to be in front 24-23.

From then on it was ding-dong affair with both players facing match at 30-all. Garden, however, managed to hold a shot for the match.

Garden now faces a more experienced opponent in the semi-final when he comes up against Ken Shapiro (above right), who accounted for Alex Horwitz in the second round.

The other semi-final is between two of the club’s recent newcomers, Jack Fooks (left) and Max Thomas (right).

Fooks accounted for the very experienced Clive Wolff , while Thomas had a 31-19 win over Allan Kavnat after a 35-end encounter.

Thomas was never headed, but Kavnat was competitive throughout and at one stage was lagging only by four shots (16-20) after 24 ends.

Women’s Club gearing for 8th Invitation Triples

Seeking prize “sponsors” for popular guessing competition DOUBLE BAY Women’s Club has appealed to the overall membership to continue supporting its annual Invitation Triples tournament, which this year, will be contested over the weekend of August 25-26.

A spokeswoman for the organising committee said

this week that the Double Bay membership has been “very generous” in its support for the event, which is now considered the most popular and one of the

best on the NSW Women’s Lawn Bowls calendar. “We appeal to our very generous members and

supporters to again be major sponsors and prize donors for the guessing competition, which goes hand-in-hand with the weekend’s activities at the club,” she said.

Previous top prizes in the guessing competition have included new sets of bowls and other equipment and clothing.

The membership has also donated items of jewellery and fashion accessories as well as small electrical appliances.

The 2012 event will be the eighth and, as in the

past, attracts acceptances to compete from leading

Australian and State players as well as top-flight

players at District and club level.

Organisers say that last year the quota of 126 players was filled several weeks before the deadline. “This year the response has been even more remarkable with about half the invited players

Claire Duke, one of

Australia’s leading women lawn bowlers is a regular competitor in the Double Bay Invitation Triples

having accepted and, in most cases, nominated balanced and well performed triples teams of national and state standards,” the spokeswoman added.
