·  Side to target

·  Stick on ground

·  Sweep the ground/ floor

·  Triangle with arms

Equipment:

·  9 Poly spots

·  9 Soft striking balls

·  9 Hockey sticks

·  9 Baskets

·  9 Cones

·  9 Bowling pins

Protocols:

·  Start- “GO”

·  Stop- “Freeze”

·  “Eyes on Me”

·  “Ready, Set, Strike”

Set Induction: Good morning boys and girls. Today we will be working on striking with accuracy making sure our stick stays on the ground. Have you all used a hockey stick to strike a ball before? Have you all ever been to a hockey game before? That’s great, and if you have not, we will practice how to do it correctly in just a minute. We are going to have a great time and learn some new things about striking!

Content Development:

·  Students will first stand on a poly spot and demonstrate to me how they think swinging a hockey stick should look like. If I find one that looks right pull that student out to demonstrate the skill to everyone.

·  Then explain the cues to the students without the sticks.

·  Then have students pick up the sticks and show them hand placement.

·  Make sure the students know that the stick always keeps contact with the floor. Explain why!

·  Then check for understanding

·  Have students practice swinging with the hockey stick 5 times

·  Then have the students pick up the ball behind them in the cone.

·  Have the students hit the ball to the wall five times

·  Now have the student step back three times and then strike the ball against the wall

·  Then bring the students back to their original spot and see how many times they can strike the ball against the wall back and forth in one minute.

·  Have students set up the bowling pins and try knocking down the pin. 10 times

·  Then have the students try scoring a goal into the basket. 5 times

·  Then have the students try to score on the big goal for one minute. If you make it then move back.

·  Each cone is worth different amount of points. Do this for about one minute.

·  Then add cones in front of the goal to make it harder.

·  Then add pins.

·  Then add baskets.

·  Then have a real goalie (Mr. Patrick) and try to score on him.

·  If inside I want the students try to hit the ball between the students legs into the basket. Each time the student makes it into the basket, the student will make his or her legs closer together.

Culminating Activity: I am going to stagger the students in a line and have them pass the ball back and forth to one another. When I yell out “Goal” the students freeze and whoever has the ball at that time will step out and try to make it into the goal. Whenever the student makes a goal the teacher has to do five push-ups but if the students miss the goal they drop their hockey stick and jump over it five times.

Closure: Can someone tell what shape we make our arms when we are striking? What hand do we put on top of the hockey stick when we hit? Someone tell me why we do not want the stick to leave the ground?
