NRASP – June 2016
CARRY ON THE CONVERSATION
On June 15th the NRASP held a Lunch n’ Learn:
Presenter: Randy Niles, OECS
Topic: The GHS Final Implementation Deadline is Upon Us. Are you Ready?
This article of the newsletter focuses on the luncheon of June 2016. If you were able to attend the luncheon, this article carries on the conversation the presenter started at the luncheon. If you were unable to attend this is helpful for really any company.
Did you Know?
· In ND and SD companies are required to have a Hazard Communication policy
· In MN companies are required to have a Right to Know (RTK) policy
· Effective immediately, all companies are required to have the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) standard written into their Hazard Communication/RTK policies.
GHS was initially introduced in the United Nations in 1992. It was brought to the United States in a press release issued by OSHA and published in the Federal Register in March 2012. Employers had until December 1, 2013 to train all employee on label and SDS format changes. Manufacturers and distributors were required to comply with all labeling and SDS changes by June 1, 2015. Distributors were no longer allowed to ship containers by the chemical manufacturer or importer unless it is a GHS label on December 1, 2015. And GHS has been fully implemented and is required to be part of the written Hazard Communication and RTK policies effective June 1, 2016
Additional highlights of the presentation:
· RTK policies require the training of 4 routes of entry, this is not rigid in ND, but highly recommended. The 4 Routes of Entry to train include:
o Inhalation
o Ingestion
o Absorption
o Injection/Puncture
· Extremely important to train employees on requirements of secondary containers that do not have the manufacturer’s label. Always include:
o Name of product &
o Hazard on every label
· Never use food containers as secondary containers
