Scholarship Policies

Forensics Scholarship Policy

To receive a scholarship, you need not be a Communication Major, though you must be a full time BGSU student. Forensics & Debate Scholarships are awarded for a full academic year. A committee reviews applications. Recommendations are made to the School of Media and Communication based on the audition, references, past contributions and the needs of the program. Only complete applications will be considered.

Audition Format

In addition to an interview, auditions consist of a speech, performance or forensics event, (roughly 5 minutes) which may be from this year’s season or an original composition of one of the following types:

1. Interpretive PerformanceExample: Prose, Poetry, Dramatic, Humorous or Duo Interpretation

2. Public Address SpeechExample: Informative, Persuasion/Oratory, Salesor Expository

3. Limited Preparation EventExample: Impromptu, Extemporaneous Speakingor Broadcasting

4. Debate or Student CongressComprised of the 1 AC (first Affirmative Constructive/Government Case)

Scholarship Responsibilities

a.Participation in a minimum of eight (8) tournament weekends over the academic season.

b.Four (4) events are required, reflecting each of three (3) genre’ (interpretation, public address, limited preparation/debate)

c.Target a minimum of five (5) events for season tournament participation.

d.Attend and participate in forensics meetings, weekly coaching (min. ½ hr. per event), course duties, special events, showcases, class periods and team events.

e.Participate in state and national competitions, if assigned by the Director of Forensics and Debate. Participation is mandatory if qualified.

f.Participate in or help to organize and run the BGSU Falcon Classic Forensics Tournament hosted each fall & Theme Tournament held each spring.

COMM1990/3990 Enrollment and Participation

Recipients are required to enroll in COMM1990 or COMM3990 “Forensics Activities I & II” in order to fulfill scholarship commitments and be allowed to travel to tournaments.

Maintain Good Academic Standing

Recipients are required to maintain a 2.5 GPA, be a full time BGSU undergraduate student, be eligible for intercollegiate forensics competition, and be making adequate progress toward degree completion.

Forensics and Debate Prioritization

As a recipient, you are expected to maintain academic coursework as a first priority and commitment to the Forensics, Speech and Debate Program as a second. Other obligations such as employment, participation in extramural activities, social activities, campus organization involvement and other co-curricular involvement must be prioritized below these first two. Weekend tournament travel and weekly coaching is mandatory. Due to time conflicts, forensics scholarships will not be issued to students participating in conflicting organizations, including: band, social sororities/fraternities, athletics, residence hall advisors and other activities requiring extensive weekend time commitments. Inquire for clarification.
