What will we be learning this week? 8/14-8/18

Word Study
English / Secret stories:)
Declarative, interrogative, and imperative sentences
Reading / We will continue to meet in small groups and also have guided reading as part of our workshop.We will continue to respond to our reading and learn about various reading responses, and discuss strategies used to sound out words.
Handwriting / Review Frog Jump Capitals
Writing / We will be writing and editing our first draft of a piece we chose.
Math / We will be working on building numbers, expanded form, odd and even numbers, and comparing numbers
Social Studies / We will continue to learn about the government and the Constitution. We will also review continents and begin on learning the names and locations of the oceans
Science / Not taught this month, though we are learning about insects and other critters:)

Parent Information / SS- We began learning about the Constitution and what rights we have as US citizens. We have even acted some of this out to help us.
We have continued to learn the continents, the name of the continent we live on, our country, our state, the county and city our school is in.
Math- After finishing the EOY 1st grade assessment we began our math groups this week. They did a pretty good job going from station to station. We reviewed different ways to show a number and also learned what standard form and expanded form are.
Reading/writing- While we have been reading in our own book and and have been reflecting on our reading, we met in small groups based upon reading levels and read great books together. We “gathered seeds” on various topics this week. Some were fictional and some were personal narratives.
English- We reviewed word order and have edited errors in paragraphs while learning about the earth.
Character- we discuss and learned about showing compassion and wrote character notes to our classmates:)
*Please remember to record your child’s reading time in the agenda each night. Also, please sign it. They get a Character Token if it is signed.
*We still have a few needed items on our class wish list; a box of thin black EXPO markers, and a few packages of red pens. If you are willing to donate one of these items please send me a note or an e-mail.
*If you know you will be picking up your child early for a doctor’s appointment, etc please send me an e-mail or write me a note in your child’s agenda. This will allow us to have your child packed up and ready to go at the needed time.
Student extra credit: Write a paragraph explaining how you showed compassion this weekend.
Student Information / You did a pretty good job rotating through all the stations this week in math and reading.

Tuesday- Visit from an author- LC

Wednesday- Picture Day- children wear their uniform

Thursday- SS Quiz (location of continents, know the continent we live on, our country, our state, our county, and Monroe)

Friday- Word Study Test 4
