SECTION 055200 - METAL RAILINGS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1  SUMMARY

Note that where handrails are required, specify DSI Aluminum Continuous Handrail system. The Aluminum Continuous Handrail may also be used in conjunction with any of the DSI PolyRail® Vinyl Railing Systems. If the Aluminum Continuous Handrail system is to be include in this project as part of the vinyl railing system, then include this section and Section 066300 “Plastic Railings” in the project manual.

1.2  ADMINISTRATIVE REQUIREMENTS

Retain the “Coordination” paragraph below if vinyl railings are also part of this project. Otherwise delete this paragraph.

  1. Coordination: Coordinate Work of this Section with Work of Section 066300 “Plastic Railings.”
  2. Preinstallation Conference: Conduct conference at [Project site] <Insert location.

Retain and edit subparagraphs below for large or complex projects. Retain and add only those subparagraphs that are project specific. Delete these subparagraphs if this information is covered in Section 013100 “Project Management and Coordination.”

  1. Meet with Owner, Architect, Installer, railing system manufacturer's representative, framing Installer, and installers whose work interfaces with or affects railing system.
  2. Review methods and procedures related to railing system installation, including manufacturer's written instructions.
  3. Review and finalize construction schedule, and verify availability of materials, Installer's personnel, equipment, and facilities needed to make progress and avoid delays.
  4. Examine deck substrate conditions and finishes for compliance with requirements, including flatness and fastening.
  5. Review structural loading limitations.
  6. Review railing system connection details and condition of other construction that affects railing system.
  7. Review temporary protection requirements for railing system during and after installation.

1.3  ACTION SUBMITTALS

  1. Product Data: Of Manufacturer's product lines for railings assembled from standard components.
  2. Include construction details, material descriptions, dimensions of individual components and profiles, and finishes.
  3. Include rated capacities, furnished specialties, and accessories.
  4. LEED Submittals:
  5. Product Data for CreditMR4: For products having recycled content, documentation indicating percentages by weight of postconsumer and preconsumer recycled content. Include statement indicating cost for each product having recycled content.
  6. Shop Drawings:
  7. Include plans, elevations, sections, and [mounting] [attachment] details.
  8. Include details of equipment assemblies. Indicate dimensions, weights, loads, required clearances, method of field assembly, components, and location and size of each field connection.
  9. Detail fabrication and assembly of <Insert portion of Work.

Retain "Samples" Paragraph below for single-stage submission of Samples. If retaining "Samples" Paragraph below, delete the “Samples for Initial Selection” and “Samples for Verification” that following below.

  1. Samples: For each exposed product and for each color specified, <Insert dimensions in size.
  2. Sections of each distinctly different linear railing member, including handrails, top rails, posts, and balusters.
  3. Fittings and brackets.

Retain "Samples for Initial Selection" and "Samples for Verification" paragraphs for two-stage submission of Samples. If retaining the “Samples for Initial Selection” and “Samples for Verification” paragraphs below, delete the "Samples" Paragraph for single-stage submission above.

1.4  INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

  1. Qualification Data: For manufacturer and Installer.

Requirements in first paragraph below are for test reports for products on which tests are performed either by independent testing agencies or by manufacturers in their own labs. Retain first option if testing is likely to be performed in manufacturer's facilities and witnessed by a qualified testing agency; retain second option if testing is performed by the testing agency.

  1. Product Test Reports: For each <Insert product, for tests performed by [manufacturer and witnessed by a qualified testing agency] [a qualified testing agency].

1.6  QUALITY ASSURANCE

Include in this Article prerequisites, standards, limitations, and criteria that establish an overall level of quality for products and workmanship. Include only those quality-assurance provisions that affect all Work of this Section.

Quality assurance measures that take place only in the factory or shop should be specified in Part 2 – Products.

Quality assurance measures that take place only on the project site should be specified in Part3 – Execution.

  1. Manufacturer Qualifications: A railings system manufacturer who is a member in good standing with PCI and AAMA.
  2. Mockups: Build mockups [to verify selections made under Sample submittals] [and] [to demonstrate aesthetic effects].

Verify that Drawings indicate exactly what portion of the building is to be part of the mockup or that the exact size and configuration of the mockup is indicated on the Drawings.

  1. Build mockup of typical of each railing system specified as shown on Drawings.
  2. Approval of mockups does not constitute approval of deviations from the Contract Documents contained in mockups unless Architect specifically approves such deviations in writing.

Retain subparagraph below if the intention is to make an exception to the default requirement in Section014000 "Quality Requirements" for demolishing and removing mockups.

  1. Subject to compliance with requirements, approved mockups may become part of the completed Work if undisturbed at time of Substantial Completion.

1.7  DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Delete appropriate paragraphs below or the entire “Delivery, Storage, and Handling” Article if the requirements are adequately covered in Section 016000 “Product Requirements.”

  1. Delivery and Acceptance Requirements: Deliver materials to site in manufacturer’s original, unopened containers and packaging, with labels clearly identifying product name and manufacturer.
  2. Storage and Handling Requirements:
  3. Store and handle materials in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Keep materials in manufacturer’s original, unopened containers and packaging until installation.
  5. Store materials in clean, dry area.
  6. Keep materials dry.
  7. Protect materials and finish during storage, handling, and installation to prevent damage.

1.8  WARRANTY

Verify with Owner's counsel that warranties stated in this Article are not less than remedies available to Owner under prevailing local laws.

  1. Manufacturer's Warranty: Manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components of [handrail] [and] [guard rail] system that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.
  2. Warranty does not include the failures caused by the following:
  3. Damage caused by faulty installation, or from improper application.
  4. Damage attributable to fire, violent storms, earthquake or other Acts of God, accidents, vandalism, or other casualties, impact of objects, or exposure to atmospheric pollutants or conditions other than natural weather processes.
  5. Any materials not supplied by railing system manufacturer.
  6. Cost of installation or removal, freight, labor and similar costs.
  7. Any incidental or consequential damages.
  8. Installations where the atmosphere is influenced by bodies of salt water (or other contaminant conditions) must adhere to the railing system manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance guidelines.

Digger Specialties Inc. offers limited lifetime to living entities. For non-living entities (e.g. governments, municipalities, corporations, and commercial operations) DSI offers a 30-year limited warranty. For warranty requirements that may differ, please verify available warranties and warranty periods with manufacture.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1  MANUFACTURERS, ALUMINUM RAILING SYSTEMS

Retain the "Products" Paragraph below and delete the “Basis-of-Design” paragraphs that follow if specifying a DSI Railing System and the specific products by other manufacturers that are comparable are known.

Retain one or more of the available manufacturers below if competitive bidding is required. If retaining any of these manufacturers, insert the appropriate product name and model number for each manufacturer to correspond with the DSI Railing System selected above.

  2. Key-Link Fencing & Railing, Inc., < insert name and model number of comparable product .
  3. Trex Company, Inc., < insert name and model number of comparable product .

2.2  ALUMINUM [HANDRAILS] [AND] [GUARD RAILS]

  1. Railing System Description <insert railing type designation used on drawings>: 2 rail system with cable infill.
  2. Railing System Configuration:

Select the characteristics below that apply to the railing system being specified. Characteristics are identified according to specific DSI Series and Styles to assist with editing.

Typically retain the first option in “Guardrail Height” subparagraph below. Verify specific project code requirements before selecting any of the options.

  1. Guardrail Height: [42 inches (1060 mm)] [36 inches (915 mm)].

Typically retain the first option in “Handrail Heights” subparagraph below and delete the other. Verify specific project code requirements before selecting any of the options.

  1. Handrail Height: [36 inches (915 mm)] <Insert dimension>.
  2. Decorative Top Rail: 1.75 inches (45 mm) wide by 1.375 inches (35 mm) high.
  3. Bottom Rail: 1.75 inches (45 mm) wide by 1.25 inches (32 mm) high.
  4. Posts: Square, aluminum post with welded base plate.

Retain one or more of the post types as needed to suit project requirements. If specifying more than one, verify that the Drawings clearly indicate which types of posts are being used and where they are located.

  1. Plain Type: [2 inches (50 mm)][2.5 inches (64 mm)][4 inches (100 mm)] square, plain posts.

Note that only flat caps (plain, square, low pyramidal caps) are available with 6” decorative posts. Coordinate with "ACCESSORIES" article below.

  1. Decorative Type: [4 inches (100 mm)][6 inches (150 mm)] square, decorative posts with flutes.
  2. Cable Infill: Stainless steel wire rope.

2.3  PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

Retain "Delegated Design" Paragraph below if Contractor is required to assume responsibility for structural design of railing system and connections to other building components.

  1. Delegated Design: Engage a qualified professional engineer, as defined in Section014000 "Quality Requirements," to design railings, including attachment to building construction.
  2. Structural Performance: Railings, including attachment to building construction, shall withstand the effects of gravity loads and the following loads and stresses within limits and under conditions indicated:

Subparagraphs below are based on the International Building Code; revise to suit Project and to comply with requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

  1. Handrails and Top Rails of Guards:
  2. Uniform load of 50 lbf/ ft. (0.73 kN/m) applied in any direction.
  3. Concentrated load of 200 lbf (0.89 kN) applied in any direction.
  4. Uniform and concentrated loads need not be assumed to act concurrently.
  5. Infill of Guards:
  6. Concentrated load of 50 lbf (0.22 kN) applied horizontally on an area of 1 sq. ft. (0.093 sq.m).
  7. Infill load and other loads need not be assumed to act concurrently.

Delete "Thermal Movements" Paragraph below if only interior railings are required.

  1. Thermal Movements: Allow for thermal movements from ambient and surface temperature changes.

Differential values in "Temperature Change" Subparagraph below (for aluminum in particular) are suitable for most of the U.S.

  1. Temperature Change: [120 degF (67 degC), ambient; 180 degF (100 degC, material surfaces)] <Insert temperature change.

Fire-test-response characteristics in first two paragraphs below are generally included to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Note that most of the metal railing systems use plastic, rubber, or fiberglass components that may be required to comply with surface burning if used in interior situation. Consult with local authority having jurisdiction to verify.

Place characteristics here if they are applicable to all products in this Section and their performance, once installed, is part of a fire-rated assembly. Place characteristics in individual product descriptions if each product has different characteristics and performance, or locate overall criteria, including test methods and listing requirements, here and product-specific performance values in each product description. Never use terms such as "fire-hazard classification" or others implying some degree of fire-risk assessment.

  1. Surface-Burning Characteristics: Comply with ASTME84; testing by a qualified testing agency. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency.
  2. Flame-Spread Index: [35] <Insert value> or less.
  3. Smoke-Developed Index: [50] [450] <Insert value> or less.
  4. Regulatory Requirements: Comply with applicable provisions in [the U.S. Architectural & Transportation Barriers Compliance Board's ADA-ABA Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities] [and] [ICCA117.1].
