Naviance

Naviance is a web-based tool that guides you through many parts of the college search process. Students are given a password in the beginning of junior year and are encouraged to use all of Naviance’s features. Parents will receive their own password when they attend the Junior Seminar in either November or January of their child’s junior year.

Important to remember

Historical Data

·  Please remember that the data in Naviance is historical, and that trends change in admissions from year to year. Naviance does not provide guarantees – just guidelines.

Biographical Data (test scores, GPA)

·  The data in Naviance never gets shared with college admission officers. This is for DSHA’s internal use only.

·  Test scores are sent directly to us from College Board (SAT) and ACT and are updated in Naviance at that time.

·  Your GPA is updated after each semester. If your GPA is different than what you see on Naviance, please see your School Counselor.

To sign in to Naviance:

1.  Visit the following website: https://connection.naviance.com/family-connection/auth/login/?hsid=dsha

2.  Enter your username and password. Your username is your E-mail address. If you change your E-mail address, make sure that you change your username on Naviance.

3.  New users (students) need a registration code. A member of the Student Services staff can give you your code.

4.  Parents: Prior to receiving your own password, you can log in as a guest. For the guest password, please contact a member of the Student Services staff.

5.  If you are having a hard time logging in, please let someone in Student Services know.

To update your profile:

1.  Click on the “About Me” tab, under “Official Things” and then click on “Profile”.

2.  You can update personal data by clicking on the “Edit” button.

3.  You can update parent information under the “Parents” tab. Parents’ E-mail addresses are important for correspondence.

To do a college search:

1.  Once logged on to Naviance, click on the “Colleges” tab and then under “College Research” click on “College Search.”

2.  There will be a list of questions about what you are looking for in a college. The more specific and honest you are in answering these questions, the shorter and more accurate this list will be. If you don’t have a preference, keep your mind

open to a whole range of possibilities. As you finish each screen, click on the “next” button on the bottom right part of the screen.

3.  As you add more information and click from screen to screen, you will see the number of colleges that fit your criteria start to decrease. At any point, you can

choose to “view matches.” This will give you a list of schools that fit the criteria that you have designated.

4.  “Pick” the specific schools on your list that you would like to explore further.

While exploring, choose schools even if you haven’t heard of them before. You can select criteria to help narrow down your choices (average test scores,

enrollment, tuition costs, etc.).

5.  Once you have picked a list of schools, you can do a few things:

a.  “Save your search.” This way you can keep different kind of lists (ex. “likely school search”; “California schools search”; “Jesuit search”). At the

stage of exploration, having a long list is recommended.

b.  “Compare” gives you the opportunity to see how your admission statistics match up against those of Loyola graduates who have been accepted by those schools in the past. Remember to look at the total number of applicants – the more data, the better. Look at the graphs, too, for the full range of data – that tells you more than the average GPA and test scores can tell you.

c.  “Add to My Colleges” gives you the chance to add these schools to a list of your prospective colleges.

To add a college to your list of schools you’re interested in:

1.  This can be accomplished through Naviance’s “College Search” (see above).

2.  You can also click directly on the “College” tab from your main page.

3.  Click on “Colleges I’m thinking about” and “add to this list.”

Why you should create a list of “Colleges I’m Thinking About”:

1.  The College Center has the ability to publicize programs and scholarships that are school specific. For example, if Creighton University is hosting a reception in Chicago, the College Center can E-mail information to all those students who have listed Creighton in “Colleges I’m Thinking About.”

2.  You will automatically receive an E-mail when any of your prospective colleges is coming to Divine Savior Holy Angels High School for a visit.

3.  You can rate your schools in order of interest.

4.  This list will automatically post any known deadlines to help you keep track of important dates. Always verify that these deadlines are accurate by consulting

the colleges’ web sites.

5.  The three links to the right of each college are also helpful:

a.  “Contact” gives you the opportunity to E-mail the college’s admission office with any questions.

b.  “Graph” shows you a scattergram of Divine Savior Holy Angels High School applicants to the institution for the most recent three years. This graph shows DSHA GPA on one axis and ACT or SAT score on the other and plots former graduates on the chart. A legend at the bottom of each graph indicates which

candidates have been accepted (green box), denied (red X), and wait listed (blue diamond).

c.  “Website” takes you automatically to the homepage of the school that you are investigating.

6.  Once you have determined that you are no longer interested in a school, you can delete the school from your list.

Scholarship Listing

We frequently update the list of scholarships in Naviance. Click on the “Colleges” category under “Scholarship & Money” to research scholarship opportunities.
