Flower Arranging: Vertical (Heavenly Style) Design Using a Pinholder

This line design, created in the Oriental manner, uses a pinholder, a shallow open dish, and very little plant material. A line determines the eye’s visual path and a vertical line is uplifting and inspirational. The main placements in this design represent Heaven, Man and Earth.

1.  Characteristics of a vertical line design

a.  Uses very little plant material

b.  Plant material is chosen to provide a vertical thrust and arranged with open spaces.

c.  There is contrast of shapes and/or color.

d.  The design is asymmetrically balanced.

e.  Plant material is placed forming triangles but in a tall, narrow manner.

2.  Supplies needed

a.  Container – a shallow, open dish in a neutral color. 6”- 9” in diameter is preferable in a round, square or oblong shape.

b.  Pinholder (Kenzan) – about 3” in diameter. A smaller or larger pinholder is OK but should be in proper proportion to your container.

c.  Stick-um, Cling, or floral clay

d.  Sharp scissors or clippers

3.  Plant material needed

a.  3-6 stems of line material such as larkspur, liatris, snaps, or branches (bare or blooming depending on the season

b.  3 medium sized flowers such as roses, chrysanthemums, Gerbera daisies, tulips, lilies or iris

c.  A few stems of greens such as lemon leaf, camellia, pittosporum, aucuba, or fern.

Please be on time and bring your creativity. Call Marge with any questions. 755-6345

Membership: We have a new member! Please welcome Patty L. Camerota.

Born in Key West, Florida, she grew up in San Diego, California. A social worker by profession, she joined the pharmaceutical industry in 1974. She is a"path creator," as she became the first woman Division Manager for E.R. Squibb and Sons. The last fifteen years in the pharma industry, she devoted her life to accredited certified medical education for physicians, nurses, PAs and NPs in the Northeast area. Upon retirement in 2012, she began studying for a Master Gardener certification through Penn State Cooperative Extension College of Agricultural Sciences. She earned the certification in December 2013. Her love of gardening stems from a desire to honor the memory of her father, Oscar Franz Prath. His German heritage embraced all forms of landscaping. Anything he would plant in his compost pile would take root. She has two treasured antique rose bushes from her father which have been transplanted four times! She and her husband, Tony, chose River's Edge for their retirement years. They love the community and moved here to their new home in August of 2016 from Central Pennsylvania. Welcome, Patty! Flower Show: We have begun the process of putting our next flower show together. It will be a Small Standard Flower Show which means there will be three design classes with four exhibitors in each class, a total of only 12 design exhibits. The dates are October 26, 27 and 28, save the dates on your calendars! It will be a holiday show with the theme “Home for the Holidays”. We will have a flower design class for the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s holidays so begin planning your design. We are excited and hope you will be too! Submitted by Sherry Jeffries

Plant Sale: May 13, 2017 from 8 am to 2 pm at Mulberry Park in Shallotte

It is just a couple of months before the garden club’s big fundraiser for the year. Everyone should have their plants propagated and potted in clean plastic pots by now. We want the plants to have a good root system by May and look better than the local nurseries as they are our competition. Sign-up sheets will be passed around during our March meeting, so save the date and come and spend the day with our club members. Submitted by Sherry Jeffries

Merchandise Sales: Aprons, Scissors, Pinholders and Calendars

We are trying something new at our next two meetings. You will be able purchase our merchandise with your credit card. We would like to try the system out, so if you need to purchase an apron, scissors, pinholders or a calendar, bring your credit card so we can try out the Square! Submitted by Sherry Jeffries
