Engineering Design Activity
Introduction
Provide a brief re-introduction to the activity, written for students at the appropriate grade level. Use vocabulary that the students have learned within the lesson, including EDP vocabulary.
This entire document is intended to be four pages or less (or two sheets, double-sided).
Identifying a Need
- Describetheproblemyou’re going to solve:
- What are your criteria orgoals?
You may want to drop the reference to criteria for grades lower than 5.
- What are yourconstraints orlimitations?
You may want to drop this question for grades lower than 5.
Designing a Solution
Provide a brief description of a design challenge for which the students will design a solution to their previously-defined problem. It should relate directly to the reading activity that precedes it. It should list anything the students must or should do so their design activity is more likely to help learn the associated science content.
The following rectangle is use for students to draw a design. Generally, students only need to come up with one idea but you may want to give them extra space in case they change their mind. Edit the following rectangle to fit the grade level and the needs of the lesson.
Building a Prototype
Provide a series of general steps for the students to follow as they build a prototype of one of their designs. They should be directly connected to the lesson and may vary in both length and specificity depending on grade level.
Testing the Protype
Provide the steps for a student to follow to test their design. It will be directly connected to the lesson itself, and may vary in both length and specificity, depending on grade level, etc.
Evaluating the Results
Provide a table for the students to use in evaluating their designs. It should provide space for students to record their guesses or predictions followed by the results of their testing of their prototype.
Guess or PredictionObservations (Results of testing.)
Analysis or discussion
Provide evaluation questions for the students to answer. Replace the general questions below as needed with more specific question. You may want to ask more questions depending on the grade level.
Why do you the testing of your design came out the way it did?
How did it compare to the results that the other students saw with their designs?
