To get started in the Neighbourhood, you will need the following:

·  An access code: Depending upon your school, you can purchase an access code in your college bookstore or pick up an access code from your instructor.

o  You can also purchase an access code online at www.mypearsonstore.ca.

o  Use the following ISBN if you buy the access code online.

§  12 month/two term access: 0133060160

·  A valid school e-mail address (for first time users)

·  Get a course ID from your instructor

STEP 1: Register (note different instructions for First Time and Returning Users)

1. Go to www.thecanadianneighbourhood.ca and click “STUDENT” under “REGISTER

·  If you have an access code, select “Yes, I have an access code” to continue.

2. License Agreement & Privacy Policy:

·  Click “I Accept” to indicate that you have read and agree to the license agreement and privacy policy.

3. Select appropriate option under “Do you have a Pearson Education account?

·  Provide login name and password if you do; if not, complete the registration process.

4. The Confirmation & Summary page confirms your registration.

·  The information will be emailed to you for your records.

·  Keep it safe for future reference.

STEP 2: Begin exploring the Canadian Neighbourhood

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: The latest version of Flash, currently Flash 11, is required to run the Neighbourhood. If your computer does not have the latest version of Flash, you will be prompted to download Flash when you first log on. You can simply click on the prompt on your screen and you will be directed to the Flash website.

·  After you have registered and redeemed your PIN access code, go to www.thecanadianneighbourhood.ca to access your Neighbourhood course. Click on LOG IN NOW, then enter your User ID and Password when prompted.

·  The program opens up to the Neighbourhood Course List page. Click on your course to open and launch the program.

·  On the next page, you will notice a dialogue box has opened directing you to click the collapse icon before continuing:

·  Once you have collapsed the left navigation bar, click to enter the Neighbourhood.

·  From the program home page (with an aerial view overlooking the Neighbourhood community), click on the icons on the left to open up and navigate through the program:

o  This is the What’s New icon. Clicking on this brings up a list of Neighbourhood households and institutions that contain new information for that Season and Episode. Click on any family or institution name to open up content. The individual characters in the family all will have:

§  A biography

§  An Episode story

Some characters in some Episodes will have:

§  A video

§  A medical record

o  This is the Household icon, which brings up a list of all Neighbourhood families. Click on any family name to open up content. Note there is a biography for each character, and an Episode story for that character. An underlined term in orange links to a definition. Note that some Episodes for some characters contain links to videos on the right side of the screen

o  This is the Health Care Settings icon, which brings up a list of all institutions. Click on any setting to bring up content on the health care providers and happenings at that setting.

o  This is the Neighbourhood Information icon, to access the Community Facts and the Neighborhood News newspaper. Open up these items for background community information, and breaking news that affects Neighbourhood characters.

o  This is the home icon to take the user back to the home page.

·  At the top of the screen, you can tell what Season and Episode you are viewing. From the drop down options circles, you can change the Season and Episode. Note that you have to enter a Household, a Health Care Setting, or the Neighbourhood Information section, using the large circle icons on the left of the screen, before you switch Seasons or Episodes.
