Required Materials

Please bring these to class each and every day:

  • Pencils(all work must be done in pencil)
  • Spiral Notebook or Composition Book for Notes
  • Binder with Loose Leaf Paper
  • Graph Paper
  • Red Pen used to grade homework

Calculator policy:

  • Calculators will be used in class but it will be your responsibility to return it to its proper place before the end of class.
  • Please do not write on any calculator or put inappropriate things on it.
  • Please do NOT press hard on the screen as that can damage it.
  • Use only your fingers to push the buttons and not your pencil or pen.
  • Do not open the battery case for any reason.
  • Please clear the memory RAM before returning it.
  • Use only your assigned calculator.

Course Description:

This course includes the study of functions, solving systems of equations in 3 variables, systems of inequalities, Quadratic functions, graphing parabolas, solving polynomial equations up to 5 degrees, radical equations & functions, exponential & logarithmic functions, and last but not least rational functions. Emphasis will be on solving equations, discovering patterns, graphing various functions, etc. You will be doing a lot of thinking which is what math is all about!

Assignments & Homework:

Homework will be assigned daily for practice and mastery. Students are expected to complete all assignments including tests by the due date. The grade awarded for any assignment or test should reflect how well you know the required academic content. To get full credit, all your work must be shown!

In general, homework will be checked daily by: 1) grading it yourself with a red pen,2) grading a select few, or 30 by completion (score of 0 or 100). Assignments not turned in by the due date will be awarded a grade of zero.All late work will be given a maximum of a 70% if it is turned in by the next day in class and if all work is shown. Each homework is considered a minor grade.

Each student will be given one day for each day of absence from a particular classto complete an assignment without penalty.

Grades:

All minor grades are scored as 40% of your grade while all major grades are 60%.

Quizzes:

A quiz will be given from time to time but you will be forewarned. It will cover material from the previous days of instruction and count as a minor grade.

Tests:

Tests will be given according to what is planned in the calendar.If any student is absent, they will be given one day for each excused absence to make up a test.If a student does not pass a test, they may retake it within 3 days of grade notification. Each student must come for tutoring beforeretaking the tests in the Testing Center (Room 212). The maximum grade is a 70 for retakes.

Tutorials:

Tuesday and Thursday nights in the Media Center can be utilized for extra tutorials from 4:30 – 6:30 PM.

Binders & Notebooks:

Each student’s geometry binder will include all homework, notes, classwork, quizzes and tests. It will also contain all postulates, definitions, and theorems covered in class. Separate dividers should be used for Notes, Homework, Quizzes, and Tests. Notebook checks will be conducted periodically and count as a minor grade.

Electronics Policy:

For the most part, my classroom is an electronics free zone! Please keep all cell phones or other electronics devices turned off or on silent out of sight. If you use it in class, you will be sent down to the office to turn it in. Your parent or guardian will have to pay $15 to have it returned.

Disciplinary Steps:

1st – Warning, 2nd– Detention (15 minutes in Room 327),

3rd – Detention (30 minutes in Room 327), 4th – Office Referral

Student Behavior:

  1. All the rules in the Student handbook will be strictly enforced.
  2. Be in your seat when the bell rings.
  3. Be in dress code. Shirt tail tucked in, belt on, solid polo shirt, etc.
  4. Come to class prepared with your notebook, paper, pencil, and other supplies.
  5. Raise a hand if you have something relevant to say. Please do not talk unless given permission or called upon by the teacher. Remember, if you are talking, you are not listening as well as someone else. Do not disturb others in class by talking out of turn.
  6. Treat your classmates with courtesy, respect and kindness.
  7. Remember the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
  8. Please try to do your homework when due which in this class is the very next day. It is the student’s responsibility to acquire all make-up assignments and notes from the instructor.
  9. Copying any assignment for both parties will be given a grade of zero. It is considered cheating and is dishonest.
  10. All work must be shown for all assignments for full credit.
  11. We work bell to bell with no “free time”. Time is precious and must be used wisely!
