Deutsch III: Syllabus

Text: Deutsch Aktuel 2, 2004 ed. (units 4-12)

Supplemental short stories, poems, etc.

The third year German language course will expand on vocabulary and grammar acquired in the first two years. You will continue to learn to express yourself in German on a variety of topics including: daily activities, animals, going to a restaurant, shopping at a grocery store, shopping at a department store, hobbies and interests, camping and water sports, holidays and festivals, sending a letter, corresponding on a computer, occupations, health, and driving etc.

Grammar points you will encounter include the genitive case, der word endings, demonstrative pronouns, adjective endings, prepositions taking either the accusative or dative case, da and wo compounds, the past perfect tense, and conjunctionsamong others. You will need to keep a detailed notebook of grammar points and vocabulary covered. Not every thing we learn will be covered in the book. Therefore, it is important to make sure you take notes on EVERYTHING and study from them often. Anything written on the board is fair game for a test or quiz.

Learning a foreign language requires dedication, practice, class participation, good attendance, and attention. I encourage you to speak in German as much as possible in class (and out of class if you can!). The best way to learn the language is to speak it and use it! Don’t worry about making mistakes – just try to make yourself understood in German. Relax and have fun with it! Make sure you do your assignments as they are meant to reinforce what we learn in class. Homework points will add up and can positively or negatively affect your grade. Study your vocabulary every night, even if I don’t tell you to.

You will be graded using the traditional point system. Assessments include but are not limited to tests, quizzes (announced and unannounced), papers, oral presentations, dialogues, class participation, individual projects, homework completion and accuracy etc.

Welcome to German III!!! I look forward to a successful and fun year!
