Purpose of the role
To support the Department Health and Safety Advisor with the development and implementation of good health and safety practices in the Estate & Facilities Department and wider university.
Line management responsibility for: There is no line management responsibility.
Main areas of responsibility:
- To support the development and implementation of good health and safety practice and processes in line with legislation, University policy and the department Health and Safety strategy.
- To assist with the review and implementation of policy, codes of practice, and management systems and the delivery of safety briefings, workplace inspections and audits.
- To assist with the development and maintenance of electronic data management systems, ensuring they are compliant with ISO document management standards and are readily available to departmental staff.
- To assist with the promotion of compliance to legislation and assist with raising standards of health and safety practice via proactive means including safety sampling, inspection and auditing using systems and checklists provided by management.
- To work closely with Site Managers, Premises Officers and Cleaning Supervisors in the development and delivery of safety briefings, site inspections and auditing.
- To provide safety related technical and administrative support to colleagues in the department, as directed.
- To administrate the department eLearning system, to monitor and report on learning progress and assist with providing access to systems when necessary.
- To support as needed other University of Brighton, Estate & Facilities Management activities.

- Knowledge and experience of estates and facilities services.
- Ability to understand technical documentation and complex Health and Safety situations.

Qualifications /
- Has or is currently studying towards a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or equivalent level qualification in a relevant discipline or a NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent Level 3 qualification.
- Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

Experience /
- Previous experience of undertaking health and safety related duties in a challenging and demanding environment, providing professional support and able to demonstrate improvements made through their engagement.
- Experience of the application of good industry practice and supporting the management of a range of associated health and safety risks.
- Experience of supporting and facilitating the completion of risk assessments, including Manual Handling, Work Equipment, CoSHH, etc.

General requirements /
- The role will require accessing roof and plant areas, reaching and working in high or awkward locations to undertake site inspections.
- The role will require frequent travel between university campuses and the Exion office.

- Experience of participation in the delivery of health and safety inspections.
- Any appointment is generally made at the bottom of the salary range for the grade dependent upon experience and previous salary.
- This is a permanent full-time post.
- Annual leave entitlements are shown in the table below and increase after 5 years’ service. In addition, to the eight Bank Holidays, there are university discretionary days between Christmas and New Year. All leave, including bank holidays and discretionary days, is pro-rated for part time employees.
