Biographical Note:

George Washington Cross was a businessman and a clerk in Montezuma, Parke County, Indiana. He was born in Ohio in 1816, and married Eliza Jane Haydon on July 25, 1838. They had seven children: Mary Ann (b. 1842), John A. (b. 1843 or 1844; d. 1853), Martha J. (b. 1846), Joseph (1847-1910), James W. (1849-1853), Elizabeth Ann (b. 1850), and Emmeline (b. 1852).

Also in the collection are items referring to two other men. The relationship of Addison Cross to George is not explained. Addison married Sarah Conaway on November 6, 1836 in Parke County. The other man is Sharon Case, who married Martha J. Crass on May 16, 1866, in Parke County. Mr. Case of Greencastle paid $25 for the title to an improved clothes dryer patented by Robert M. Morrill, and also bought a saw mill, wagon, and blacksmith shop in Putnam County on July 20, 1865.
