Personal and Group Assessments

Turn this form in on Thursday in Lecture—No credit will be given to group projects without this input from EVERYONE in the class

(Continue Answers on the Back if Necessary)

1. Personal Assessments

a. Reflect on your experience in your assigned research project.

  • Was this a valuable experience for you? In what ways?
  • Did you gain insights about the nature of scientific research? Please give examples
  • Did you see connections between the principles, concepts and content you learned in Mineralogy with the larger world or geoscience research?
  • Please give a brief accounting of your own contributions to your group project.

2. Group Assessment

Please provide any pertinent information about your group activities:

  • Did all members contribute equitably to your group project?
  • Group meetings, time on instruments, data analysis, writing, preparation of final report?
  • Was this collaborative group project a valuable experience? Please provide an explanation of why or why not…
  • Any other information you care to share?....

Assessment of Research Activities in Geology 204

I would appreciate your feedback on the value of the research experience we’ve conducted in Geology 204. This project is obviously time-consuming and costly—over $2000 in beam time, and over 100 hours of instructor time outside of scheduled labs and lectures. Please provide your feedback on the following questions. Provide any written comments as well. Your answers are anonymous and will be used only to determine whether or not to continue to do this project in future years.

4. Rather than a research project, I would have learned more if I did a series of demonstrations to show the capabilities of the instruments (e.g. the measurement of ionic radius experiment on the XRD).

5. Given the costs of beam time, I would be willing to pay an extra $50 lab fee to cover the costs of using the ICAL facilities.
