CTLE:All participants will earn 12 hours of CTLE professional development
Matter and Interactions
NYSSLS Cross Cutting Concept: Energy & Matter; Grades 2, 5, and MS: PS1
This minicourse builds ideas about the nature of matter and interactions. We will explore the small particle model of matter and how this model can be used to explain the characteristics of solids, liquids and gasses. We will also investigate physical changes versus chemical changes, and conservation of mass. We will also explore the NGSS learning progressions and performance indicators in physical science.
Energy, Matter, and Ecosystems
NYSSLS Cross Cutting Concept: Energy & Matter; Grades 2, 5, and MS: PS1
Energy absorption and conversion are at the heart of most interactions within an ecosystem. Most people know that energy comes from food. But where does the food/energy come from? Have you ever wondered how food can be converted to energy so that living things can stay alive? We will explore these questions and see what happens to the actual food molecules during this conversion process and learn how energy and matter move through an ecosystem. We will also explore the NGSS learning progressions and performance indicators in life science.
Earth, Moon, and Sun
NYSSLS Cross Cutting Concept: Scale, Proportion, & Quantity; Grades K,1,5,MS: ESS1, ESS2
Teachers will explore the size and scale of our Earth, Moon & Sun system. We will learn about orbits, moon phases, eclipses, and the causes of the seasons on Earth. We will investigate the relative sizes, motions, and positions of the Sun and Earth, with seasons being used as evidence of these relationships. We will ask questions and clarify the evidence of the factors that have cause the rise in global temperatures. We will also explore the NGSS learning progressions and performance indicators in earth science.
