Course Overview
¡Bienvenido a la clase de AP Literatura y Cultura Hispana! The main goal of this course is to analyze literature and art through the lenses of historians, sociologists, and literary critics to make connections about Hispanic culture throughout history in relation to six central themes: Societies in Contact, Time and Space, Literary Creation, Interpersonal Relationships, the Duality of Being, and the Construction of Gender.
All communication (student-teacher AND student-student) is to be in Spanish with few exceptions.
2017-2018
I. Supplies
Each student needs: 1.) three-ring binder and/or folder, 2.) pen or pencil, 3.) access to Spanish-English dictionary andrae.com; suggested: 4.) pens/highlighters for editing and5.) post-it notes
Students will be: 1.) be provided with the Azulejo textbook which will be used daily, along with other resources, and 2.) asked to print various documents for class throughout the year.
II. Assessments
For each literary work, students willcomplete analytical questions and take part in discussion. An activity will be completed in class to develop and demonstrate deeper understanding of a work’s theme and to allow for creativity on the part of the student. In-class essay responses will be completed and edited to develop composition skills. After completing a unit from the textbook, the teacher will give a unit test that reflects the format of one of the sections of the AP credit exam which will be graded with a corresponding AP rubric.
Homework analysis questions and in-class writing responses are NOT graded for the student’s overall grade, but for teacher-student feedback. Only in-class essays, activity presentations, and unit testsare evaluated for the overall grade of the student.Retaking a test and redacting an essay is always an option, but if a 1 is scored, a retake is required. Any retake should be scheduled by the student with the teacher, but it may be taken only after receiving additional assistance from the teacher.
Extra credit will never be offered.Grades can be checked online at InformationNOW, and progress reports will be distributed periodically.
III. Evaluation: Contract Grading
At the beginning of each quarter, a contract will be signed by the student stating what grade they wish to attain based on criteria we will develop collaboratively in class. Homework and in-class discussions are formative assessments that are NOT graded for the student’s overall grade but participation will be necessary based on criteria developed in the grade contract. Only summative assessments, which are in-class essays, quizzes, tests, and projects/presentations are evaluated by skill to contribute to the overall grade of the student. The grade for a unit is not composed of only the average grade of assessments, but rather a certain score for each skill as well as fulfilling the criteria on the contract.
III. Absences, Make-up Work, Extra Help
When a student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility to find out what was done in class and what homework was assigned. All assignments can be found on the teacher’s web site or on the classroom board. The student is given five days after being absent to complete any work, and the student must engage the teacher about a time to make up any activity, writing, or test. Any writing or activity presentation must be completed prior to a unit test; otherwise, the grade of Incompleteis given for the test until all work is completed.
If a student requires remediation in any topic, tutoring and assistance with writing and analysis is available before and after school by Mr. Noelle.
2017-2018
IV. Classroom Expectations
There are three expectations I have for the behavior of students: responsibility, respect, and reflection.
1. Be prepared.Bring your supplies and textbook every day. Complete any homework, whether it’s reading or composition. Translators are prohibited, but use of language dictionaries is encouraged. Have an open mind and be ready to discuss!
2. Arrive on time. Be in your seat and ready to talk before the class begins. Arriving on time and “forgetting” your materials is not excusable. Follow any directions on the board.
3. Use class time appropriately. This is a college-level course that requires attention and collaborationin class, but there is limited time for discussion and collaboration. Students are allowed to leave class for a personal emergency.
4. Be constructive and proactive. The ideas conjured from these readings must be shared, discussed, and debated. Be the spark that makes these discussions valuable and utilize others’ thoughts to build an open atmosphere! Together, we will be more!
Rules may be changed or added. The teacher may add or modify rules and, in addition to the above class rules, the student is expected to follow the rules established by Rutherford County Schools and Central Magnet School.
V. “Bring Your Own Device”
Students are encouraged to use smartphones, tablets, or laptops at specified times during class for educational purposes, especially for searching word translations. Texting friends, playing games, listening to music, or using social media sites is prohibited unless the teacher designated it as part of an assignment. If a device is not being used appropriately, it will be sequestered for the remainder of class.
VI. Consequences for Inappropriate Behavior
Failure to adhere to the stated rules will result in one or more of the following:
1.) Verbal warning and/or after-class discussion, 2.) Contact parents, and/or 3.) Referral to Administration
VII. Teacher’s Promise
Mr. Noelle will do his very best to treat each student fairly and with respect, to provide all students with a safe and focused learning environment, to enforce course and school rules, and to teach the content to its fullest.
