VENA Nutrition Committee Meeting

TOPIC / DISCUSSION / ACTION /
Discussion of Lunch Plans / It was decided to dine-in and have pizza.
Education Committee Update / Vicki Strickland gave an update of things going on with the Education Committee. They are waiting for the Nutrition Committee to revise the WIC Certifier (WC) policy at which time the Education Committee will determine competencies and training needs of the WC.
Both committees would like to meet together in August while staff is in Jefferson City for the WIC Conference. / Phyllis will e-mail Tana Lovan, Springfield-Greene County WIC to see if a room will be available to meet. Ideally we would like to meet in Jefferson City on Wednesday, August 29 from 3:45 – 5:00 pm.
Upcoming Trainings / Three-Step Counseling trainings will be in November 2007 and March 2008. The State WIC office is currently looking at locations for trainings to be held.
Tentatively plans are to have Program Updates Training in October. Whether or not the October Program Updates will take place is dependent upon USDA approving our proposal for a new computer system. If USDA does approve the new system, this October meeting will be to share with the LWPs info about the new system. It was mentioned that Cameron would be a better site for trainings in the NW District so that the NW District LWPs could more easily attend rather than in St. Joe's, which is more out of the way for may LWPs. There was some concern about trainings in the St. Louis area, due to highway construction.

WIC Certifier Policy

/ Much time and discussion took place regarding the WIC Certifier Policy. / Phyllis will revise the policy as discussed during the meeting and will send it via e-mail to committee members for review.
Nutrition Assessments / Phyllis mentioned that she received comments back from Brenda and Carolyn on possible revisions to the NA forms. Copies of comments from Brenda and Carolyn were given out. / If other committee members have comments, please send them to Phyllis. Thanks
We will discuss the NAs at our next meeting, June 25.
Scales / Some discussion was held on the calibration of scales at local agencies. It was stated that Weights and Measures would come out and do the inspections. If scales did not pass the agencies would have to get the scales fixed and Weights and Measures would come back out to re-inspect. / We are trying to locate who calibrates scales. Sometimes the cost is more than what a new scale would be.
WIC ID Folder / It was mentioned that staff would like a better quality of the ID folder. The ID folder has been developed into a heavier stock.
Next Meeting / The next Nutrition Committee meeting will be by conference call on June 25th, from 9:00-11:00. / Phyllis will schedule upcoming meetings and notify committee members.
