JOB SUMMARY:

Understand and promote education and early childhood development as defined in Early Head Start Performance Standards, Accredited Professional Preschool Learning Environments (APPLE), and Department of Children & Families (DCF) Licensing Regulations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma

Preferably experience teaching in early childhood setting working with infants and toddlers.

Meet all DCF state licensing mandated 45 hour courses training courses and certifications.

First Aid and CPR certifications

Knowledge of Windows Microsoft Office (Outlook and Word )

Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITION:

  • Be in good physical health as documented by physician exam upon hire and update annually. Obtain results of a TB screening upon hire;
  • Be in compliance with all background screening requirements and update every 5 years;
  • Able to sit on the floor and/or ground outside to be actively involved with the children;
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds and to stoop, crawl, kneel, bend and stand for periods of time;
  • Must have access to reliable transportation and able to travel by car, bus, plane, train;
  • Available for paid evening and/or weekend meetings, trainings or other work related events.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Establish and maintain a safe and healthyenvironment

Assist teaching staff with routinessurrounding children’s lunch time, nap time and snack time in accordance with EHS Performance Standards and DCF Licensing Regulations and maintaining a ratio of 2:8 at all times. This includes preparation time, interactions which make these routines learning experiences for the children and clean-up. Examples: Help children wash up and get ready to eat; help feed infants & serve family style meals with children; clean up lunch; change diapers; sweep; mop; help children go to sleep; while watching children at naptime sanitize & clean the room and materials, cut out things for the teachers, etc if all children are sleeping or resting and do not need assistance. Once Children wake up help change them, wash, put up cots, snacks and play until other teacher gets back.

Detect and report signs of illness, discomfort and usual behavior of children to Area Director.

Report any safety hazards observed indoors and outdoors;

Report suspected abuse/neglect to the Site Director and 1-800-96-ABUSE;

Work with the classroom teacher to complete paperwork relating to a child’s illness, accidents / incidents, and parent communication should a situation arise while center aide is in the classroom.

Practice appropriate sanitary procedures to include sanitizing, cleaning, diapering / toileting and hand washing.

Assist children in developing self-help skills in daily routines and hygiene care.

Engage in family style meals promoting school readiness skills in social emotional interactions, self-help, personal care routines, language and problem solving. CDE-04

Comply with all health and safe environment policies and procedure to meet the individual needs of the children. Observe posters and procedures posted on the walls.

Assist in daily maintenance of center as follows

Clean and sanitize door knobs, door frames and light switches daily.

Sanitize toys and materials from the morning activities.

Empty, sanitize and reline waste receptacles at least daily, more if needed.

Spot clean wall surfaces, windows and mirrors.

  1. Promote education and early childhood development

Assist children during nap time, clean & sanitize room and materials to allow the classroom teacher more time to work on Teaching Strategies GOLD, planning and coaching talks with the Head Teacher (takes place in the classroom)

Assist teaching staff insetting up and cleaning up before and after the meal and nap time. There may also be time to engage in play before or after these routines.

When children are awake, actively engage with the children in small groups and/or individually.

Support children having difficulty falling asleep, non-napping children and early risers by sitting next to the child and rubbing his/her back, providing a familiar item, low lighting and music, providing a quiet, individual activity.

Use daily routines and transitions as learning opportunities to support school readiness goals.

Model appropriate behavior and positive guidance techniques.

Model appropriate language and grammar skills. Encourage language with frequent one-on-one conversations at child’s eye level and with a nurturing tone and open ended questions.

  1. Ensure a competent, purposeful program, responsive to individual needs

Establish positive and productive relationships with children, parents, co-workers and visitors complying with Kids Incorporated’s Code of Conduct and Confidentiality policies as well as all HR policies and procedures.

Handle problems in a positive manner and refer parents to the classroom teacher, head teacher or site director (in that order) for clarification of center policies.

  1. Professional Development

Comply with the Professional Development Policy to meet and maintain all required credentials within the specific time frames.

Attend trainings, conferences, and other educational opportunities pertinent to job, as assigned by Site Director and mandated by licensing regulations.

Be able to apply knowledge gainedfrom trainings to support education and early childhood development.

Review your Professional Development Plan on an on-going basis in coordination with the Site Director.

Performs other related duties, as assigned by the supervisory staff.
