Title: Map Labeling Activity Using a Sticky Note

Subject Area: Social Studies

Grade Level: 2/3

Rationale: The purpose of this activity is to provide students with an opportunity to identify and locate the provinces and territories on a map of Canada.

Objectives

  • Students will label a map of Canada by dragging the province and territory names from the Sticky Note to the map

Materials:

  • Map of Canada from ABC Teach -
  • Computer with Kurzweil v. 11

Key Vocabulary

  • Province and Territory names

Description of Activity

After being assigned a blank map of Canada students will correctly label the map. They will select the correct province and territory names located in the Sticky Note and drag and drop the names to the correct location on the map. Once they have completeddragging the names to the map, the student will use Text Notes to add their name and date to the map. When this process is complete the student will save and print the document to hand in.

Before the Activity

1. Student learn names of provinces and territories

2. Teacher imports the map into Kurzweil. The map used in this tutorial was obtained online from ABC Teach -

3. Before the student can begin this activity the teacher has to prepare the map.

  1. Click on the Sticky Note .
  2. Place the cursor where you would like the Sticky Note to be located on the map.
  3. Add the names of the provinces and the territories to the Sticky Note

1 / The student will open the map in Kurzweil. /
2 / To label the map highlight the name of the province or territory and drag the name from the Sticky Note and drop the name on the correct location on the map.
A note can be dragged by highlighting it, holding down the left mouse button and dragging the note to the correct location. /
3 / Continue to label the map until there are no names left in the Sticky Note.
The empty Sticky Note indicates that there are no more names to add to the map.
This acts as a nice visual reminder for students that they have completed the assignment. /

4 / Delete the empty Sticky Note by right clicking on the note. The window opens. Select Delete Note. The Kurzweil 3000 window opens asking whether you want to permanently delete the note. Select Yes. The Sticky Note is now deleted. /
5 / Click on the Text Note to add your name. Bring the mouse cursor down to the “Name” line and using the left mouse button click to add the Text Note. A blue rectangle appears and the cursor is now on the inside of the Text Note. Type your name in the Text Note
Repeat this process to add the date. /
6 / Save the document. /
