JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Practical Nursing Instructor Department: Full-time Adult Programs

Supervisor: Practical Nursing Director Personnel

Classification: Adult Programs Personnel

Job Summary: Assist in formulating short term and long-range goals for the Practical Nursing program. Responsible for the classroom and clinical instruction for the program. Will provide quality education by maintaining the highest standard for Practical Nurse training. Serves as program’s HOSA advisor. Regular attendance is expected.

Essential Processes:

Curriculum Development:

·  Develop and update course syllabi.

·  Write course objectives.

·  Maintain daily lesson plans.

Classroom Instruction:

·  Instruct PN students in theory and practical aspects of nursing.

·  Provide individualized instruction as needed.

·  Evaluate students’ performance of nursing skills in the laboratory.

·  Maintain proper records of classroom and laboratory performance.

·  Counsel students regarding academic performance as well as attendance

performance as the need arises.

Clinical Supervision:

·  Cooperate with clinical facilities in integrating classroom and clinical

experiences.

·  Supervise and evaluate students in the clinical facilities as they perform

learning experiences based on classroom theory.

·  Consult with nursing supervisors and supplement classroom instruction with

practical experience in the various hospital departments.

VSO Advisor:

·  Implement HOSA as an integral part of the Practical Nursing program.

·  Supervise students while attending State and National HOSA conferences.

·  Assist chapter officers in planning and implementing HOSA activities.

Professional Development:

·  Attend professional improvement meetings, workshops and conferences as

required by the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education

and Gordon Cooper Technology Center.

·  Attend in-service educational programs to keep current with nursing trends.

Public Relations:

·  Assist other school personnel in maintaining a program of public relations that

will promote communication, understanding, and cooperation between the

school, the clinical facilities, and various organizations and communities of

the Gordon Cooper Technology Center district.

·  Maintain a positive image of the nursing profession and of the Practical

Nursing program.

·  Keep the public informed of the successes and activities of the Practical

Nursing program.

Other Duties:

·  Assist with the revision of student handbook as the need arises.

·  Assist in the recruitment of students.

·  Assist with the planning and supervision of graduation exercise.

·  Perform other duties as assigned by the Practical Nursing Director, Assistant

Superintendent and Superintendent.

Initiative: Model industry standard of appropriate professional behavior and appearance for nursing students. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the role of the practical nurse as a member of the health team, as well as, the functions, standards, and qualifications of practical nurses as stated by law.

In order to successfully meet the objective of this program, it is recommended

that faculty meet the following requirements for clinical and laboratory

performance.

Education: Hold a baccalaureate degree in nursing or have completed a minimum of fifteen semester hours past an associate degree or diploma in nursing with a written plan for obtaining a baccalaureate degree.

Experience: Have a current Oklahoma Registered Nursing License. Present evidence of a minimum of two (2) years full-time practice as a registered nurse in a clinical setting within the last five (5) years preceding the first date of the first employment as a teacher.

Other

Requirements: Must currently hold and maintain throughout employment a valid driver license. Must maintain and renew on an annual basis Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate in the Healthcare Provider course. Also, on an annual basis must take Tuberculosis (TB) test. Must have proof of two negative P.P.D.’s within the last 365 days or a negative chest X-ray if employee has ever had a positive P.P.D. All immunizations must be current.

Mental

Requirements: Capable of working at a fast pace with many duties being performed at one time. Requires exercise of judgment and use of learned skills. Must be able to follow instructions, including technical instructions.

Physical

Requirements: 1. Must be able to walk and/or stand up to 90% of the time.

2. Bend and/or stoop up to 150 times per day.

3. Carry a 35 lb. load, 2 times per week. May move equipment up to 5 times per day.

4. May lift a load up to 20 lbs. 5 times per day. With assistance, lifts, moves and/or transfers patients which may weigh in excess of 300 lbs. when in clinicals.

5. May push patients in wheelchair. (average push force 22 lbs.)

6. Reach overhead up to 50 times per day.

7. May apply pressure with hands, push fluids under pressure.

8. May assume hand and knees position up to 10 times per day.

9. Must be able to see in order to read and write, provide patient care, and assess patient condition. Must have hearing sensitivity, aided or unaided, sufficient to hear physiological functions in patients, normal conversation and equipment alarms set at usual levels. May utilize telephone multiple times per day.

Environmental

Conditions: Moderate exposure to hazardous risks, including potential for exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment and chemicals. Potential for bodily injury related to lifting. Accordingly, the employee must learn and apply instruction regarding appropriate methods for lifting, pushing, pulling and other physical movements common to this occupation. The employee must follow universal safety precautions. Employees are exposed to multiple interruptions, noise, disagreeable odors, and assorted chemicals.
