Success in Iraq - a record export contract for Penlon Limited
In 2008 Penlon Limited won its biggest ever export contract - a US$6.5 million order for Prima SP2 anaesthesia systems for use in hospital operating theatres throughout Iraq.
Competition was intense with sixteen companies submitting in the early stages of the tender process. Penlon was awarded the contract at the end of 2007 and started shipping by the start of second quarter 2008. A total of 250 units were built and delivered by the end of 2008.
The Prima SP2 anaesthesia system comprises an open architecture workstation equipped with integral A200SP absorber, AV-S Ventilator with advanced patient support functions, and the award winning Delta Vaporizer. Each machine was also equipped with an AGSS receiver, a suction controller, and breathing circuits and facemasks.
Standard specification catalogue items were supplied, with the exception of an upgraded back-up battery for the AV-S ventilator to provide up to one hour’s continuous use in the event of a power cut during a clinical procedure.
Penlon worked in Iraq with Kimadia, who are based in Baghdad, and are currently attached to the Iraqi Ministry of Health. Kimadia is a self-financed economic unit that is wholly-owned by the Government, but enjoys financial and administrative independence. It has sole responsibility within Iraq for importing and distributing medical devices and pharmaceuticals for both public and private sector hospitals and clinics.
Kimadia’s budget in 2008 was US$183 million for medical equipment contracts.
Penlon is well established in the Middle East with distributors with service facilities throughout the region, and exhibits every year at Arab Health in Dubai.
The company has over sixty years’ experience in medical device manufacture, selling anaesthetic machines, ventilators, intubation products, suction and oxygen therapy systems, and medical gas distribution systems in over 90 countries worldwide.
