CHAPLAINS MESSAGE: My Brother Knights, I am so inspired by your passion to recruit new members. It was mentioned at the last business meeting that sometimes all you have to do ask. It got me to thinking of another way to increase our membership to our Council of Knights of Columbus. Almost 20 years ago I had a wedding of a couple with groom being protestant. However, because his father in law was so active in the Knights of Columbus he converted to the Catholic faith specifically because he wanted to become a Knight. Pope Francis and Archbishop Lucas wants all of us to be missionary disciples. They call us to evangelize new members to the body of Christ. I exhort you to be just as passionate about inviting people to become Catholic as you do men who are already Catholic to become Knights. Ask the non-churched to join both! Get a new Catholic and get a new Knight! Fr del lape

MILKCAN DRAWING: Tears to Jon Agenor, Donald Beeghly, Raphael Onyedinma, Thomas Kiefel and Mathew Hanke for not being present. Congratulations to Robert Baker, Richard Cline and George Lamperti for being present and winning $25.00. The October Meeting Drawings will be for $25.00, $25.00, $25.00, $25.00 and $25.00.

And we take time next month to remember in sadness and gratitude Brother Knights who died in the last year. Please attend our Friday, Nov. 3 Memorial Mass, 6:30 p.m., at St. Mary Church. Columban Father Tom Shaughnessy will preside, widows are particularly invited, a dessert social will follow in the Parish Center. Please bring desserts to share. We will honor: Ed Skradski, Doug Townsend, William Clauson, Columban Father Charles Duster, Joseph Sypal, James Prysiazny, John Mastrianni and Larry Rubenstein. Knights also will be particularly honored Nov. 10 at 1:45 p.m. at the St. Mary School Veterans Assembly. Veterans yes, but all Knights are welcome and will be honored for the good Knights did for troops during World War I with recreation, worship and relaxation clubhouses and welfare centers. To save an especially set-aside seat for Knights, call Cathy Braxton at the school at 402-291-1694 by NOV. 7. The assembly will last until about 3 p.m. Lots other events upcoming: Oct. 4 Human Trafficking session with a retired federal prosecutor at St. Mary Church; Oct. 21-22 Candy Drive for the Intellectually Disabled; Nov. 11 Blue Coat Dinner honoring first responders. And let’s not forget what just happened: The garage sale was a huge success, special thanks to Ken Madison and John Clark; the parish picnic went well and Knights cooked the food, special thanks to Deputy Grand Knight Bob Hasiak, Mike Parente, Bill Kibler, Mike Cook and others who assisted. And we had the Silver Rose and special prayers at our parish picnic, overnight for the perpetual adorers and at all Sunday morning Masses. Thank you, Brother Knights! Grand Knight, Joe Ruff.

St. Jude Thaddeus

St. Jude is the Patron Saint of Hope and impossible causes and one of Jesus' original Apostles. He preached the Gospel with great passion, often in the most difficult circumstances. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, he made profound differences in people's lives as he offered them the Word of God. The Gospel tells us that St. Jude was a brother of St. James the Less, also one of the Apostles. They are described in the Gospel of Matthew as the "brethren" of Jesus, probably cousins. St. Jude is traditionally depicted carrying the image of Jesus in his hand. This recalls one of his miracles during his work spreading the Word of God. King Abagar of Edess asked Jesus tp cure him of leprosy and sent an artist to bring him a drawing of Jesus. Impressed with Abagar's great faith, Jesus pressed his face on a cloth, leaving the image of His face on it. He gave the cloth to St. Jude, who took the image to Abagar and cured him. After the death and resurrection of Jesus, St. Jude traveled throughout Mesopotamia, Libya, and Persia with St. Simon preaching and building up the foundation of the early Church. St. Jude died a martyr's death for his unwavering faith. His body was later brought to Rome and placed in a crypt under St. Peter's Basilica. After his death, many turned to St. Jude for his intercession in prayer. Jesus inspired the devotion to St. Jude for St. Bridget of Sweden when he directed her in a vision to turn to St. Jude with great faith and confidence. In a vision, Christ told St. Bridget, "In accordance with his surname, Thaddeus, the amiable or loving, he will show himself most willing to give help." During the middle Ages, St. Jude was widely venerated, but perhaps because of the confusion between his name and that of Judas Iscarlot, he slipped into temporary obscurity. In the early 20th century, St. Jude Thaddeus was relatively unknown to the general Catholic population in the US. In 1929, the first devotional service to St. Jude were held by Claretian Fr. James Tort at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in southeast Chicago; before the year ended, the country's only National Shrine of St. Jude
