Tips for Self-Service Enrollment

New process: Self-Service Enrollment (online self-registration) is beginning for the spring term.

  • You will be able to enroll in classes as well as add/drop classes via your Student Center on my.pitt.edu.
  • Your enrollment appointment (date/time that you can begin to register) is posted on your Student Center.
  • You must meet with your advisor before your enrollment appointment.

Your advisor e-mailed you about signing up for an advising appointment.

Be sure to follow your advisor’s directions to ensure that you get a timely advising appointment.

Holds:

  • Advisement Hold: Your advisor will lift this hold when you attend your advising appointment.
  • There are other types of holds (financial, judicial, academic, etc.). These holds may also affect your ability to enroll, so contact the appropriate office to resolve all hold issues prior to your enrollment appointment.

Enrollment appointment: Check your Student Center for your enrollment appointment.

  • The appointment includes a day and time when you can register.
  • Once your enrollment opens, you can register anytime up through the first day of classes.*
  • Once you have registered, you will be able to make changes online to your schedule until the last day of add/drop.

*The University does have regular maintenance on the servers scheduled from 11 p.m. on Saturday through

7 a.m. on Sunday. During these times, no access is available.

Get ready for the enrollment appointment:

  • Meet with your advisor.
  • Fill out a pre-enrollment form with your advisor.
  • Using the course descriptions Web page and the class search (see technology guide for help), plot out your spring term classes on a schedule planner.
  • ALWAYS click on view detail (blue underlined information) in Class Search to see if you qualify to take a particular course.
  • Check to see if your course selections are still open right before your enrollment appointment.

Permission numbers: Instead of a permission slip, you will need to get a permission number from the department or schoolin order to register for certain courses. Permission numbers can only be used once. Some examples of when you need a permission number are listed below.

  • If you do not have the pre-requisites for a course.
  • If the course is restricted to a school or department at the University such as Engineering or Film Studies and you are not enrolled in that program.
  • If the course requires department or instructor consent.
  • If the course is closed.

So REMEMBER:

View detail in Class Searchby clicking on blue underlined information.

If necessary, go to the department to get a permission number.

Get permission numbers before your enrollment appointment.

Registration:

  • If you have met with your advisor, you can begin your registration when your enrollment appointment opens.

Add a Class, allows you to register for a class.

Drop a Class, allows you to drop a course from your schedule along with the related recitation and lab.

Edit a Class, allows you to choose S/NC as your grade option along with variable credit (if the course is offered as such) or choosing an instructor. Please use caution when choosing S/NC as some majors will not allow this option for courses in the major. Not all courses have this grade option. After the end of add/drop (January19th for spring term), you will need to go to the Dean’s office for the S/NC option until its deadline (usually two weeks later).

  • Your registration is not complete until you hit the submit button.
  • If there is only one seat in a course, add it and hit “submit” right away, and then proceed with the rest of your choices.
  • Make sure you deal with any error messages that you encounter while enrolling in classes.
  • Check your final schedule to be sure that you are enrolled in the correct courses and desired number of credits.
  • If you need help:

Go to the Registration Office, G-1 Thackeray Hall.

Support for self-service enrollment will be available Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m.to 4:45p.m.and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. in the Registration Office, G1Thackeray Hall, but you can register anytime after youradvisement hold is lifted and your enrollment time begins.

Add/drop:

  • Do not fall below 12 units if you need to be full time. Full time status can affect:

Living in the residence halls.

Your health insurance.

Your financial aid.

  • Be careful when switching recitations! You might lose your lecture seat! To avoid this complication, go to the Registration Office.

When you will need to see your advisor:

  • Before your enrollment appointment!
  • If you are making a significant change.

Dropping a course that satisfies your algebra or composition requirement.

Changing your academic direction such as major or minor.

Changing your career path.

  • Any time you need to talk to them or get their advice.
