ACONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DR. CHARLES JOYNER, COASTAL CAROLINA UNIVERSITY BURROUGHS DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF SOUTHERN HISTORY AND CULTURE, ON RECEIVING COASTAL CAROLINA’S UNIVERSITY MEDALLION AWARD.

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is pleased to learn that Dr. Charles Joyner, Coastal Carolina University(CCU) Burroughs Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Southern History and Culture, was named one of two first recipients of Coastal Carolina’s University Medallion at the school’s annual Founders Day ceremony on September 24, 2012; and

Whereas, the University Medallion was created to honor individuals who have contributed to CCU in service (to education and the community), entrepreneurship, philanthropy, andscholarship; and

Whereas, Dr. Joyner, who holds doctoral degrees from the universities of South Carolina and Pennsylvania, is the author of Down by the Riverside, a study of rice plantations along the Waccamaw River, and has lectured at Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, and Berkeley, among other universities; and

Whereas, in previous recognition of his outstanding achievements, he has received the South Carolina Humanities Council’s Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Humanities and the Lifetime Commitment Award from Bluegrass on the Waccamaw, and he is an honorary life member of the British American NineteenthCentury Historians; and

Whereas, grateful for his important contributions to education and scholarship, the South Carolina General Assembly takes great pleasure in congratulating Dr. Joyner on this, his latest accolade, the CCU University Medallion. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dr. Charles Joyner, Coastal Carolina University Burroughs Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Southern History and Culture, on receiving Coastal Carolina’s University Medallion award.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Dr. Charles Joyner.
