The School of Management and Languages maintains full lists of optional and elective courses available to students at all Stages of study at : www.sml.hw.ac.uk/undergraduate/courses
Stages 1 & 2: / ·  In Semester 1 of Stage 1 most students are required to take either ‘Introductory Mathematics 1’ or ‘Foundation Mathematics 1’. In Semester 2 of Stage 1 students are recommended to take ‘Critical Writing & Analysis’ as the elective course.
·  In Stage 2, the course ‘Intermediate Economics 1: Theory and Techniques’ is worth 30 credits, so that students register for only three courses
Stage 3: / ·  Of the 8 courses taken at Stage 3 those that are C1, C2 and C3 courses at SCQF Level-9 or Level-10 can count as ‘Qualifying Courses’; and, if part of the Stage 3 ‘best set’ of four such courses defined in the award requirements for honours degrees, will be Qualifying Courses and will contribute to the determination of the degree classification.
·  The ‘Research Project’ component of the degree is constituted by the two synoptically linked SCQF Level-9 courses (taken at Stage 3 and which together are worth 30 credits) ‘Introductory Econometrics’ and ‘Econometrics Project’. (In ‘Introductory Econometrics’ the research techniques are taught for the written project in ‘Econometrics Project’.)
·  As specified in General Information for First Degree Students, reg. 3 (New), para. 16.4, resits of Qualifying Courses taken at Stage 3 are allowed but only in order to gain credits for the course. For the purposes of determining the degree classification, the mark obtained in the first assessment of a Qualifying Course must be used. See note below on Honours Classification for further details.
·  Mandatory and optional course choices are identical for stage 3 of the MA (honours) and the BA (ordinary) programmes (it is the level of performance expected that varies).
·  Students on the BA (ordinary) programme will be eligible to transfer back onto the MA (honours) programme subject to performance, in stage 3, equivalent to that required to permit progression to stage 4 on the MA (honours) programme.
Stage 4: / ·  All 8 (SCQF Level-10) courses taken at Stage 4 are Qualifying Courses and will contribute to the determination of the honours degree classification.
·  A Dissertation may be chosen at Stage 4 only. A student may write a dissertation in only one discipline (Management, Economics or Accountancy & Finance).
Progression Requirements
(a)  Progression through the programme requires a minimum of number of credit points:
Stage 1 to Stage 2: 90
Stage 2 to Stage 3: 210
Stage 3 to Stage 4: 360
(b)  Progression through the programme requires a minimum of Grade D in the following courses:
Stage 1: Microeconomics 1 and Macroeconomics 1
Stage 2: Intermediate Economics 1: Theory and Techniques, Intermediate Economics 2, and Quantitative Methods 2
In addition at least 90 SCQF credits associated with stage 2 must be passed at grade C, or better, at the first attempt to continue on the MA honours pathway.
Stage 3: Advanced Economics 1, Advanced Economics 2, Introductory Econometrics and Econometrics Project
In addition, at least 90 SCQF credits associated with stage 3 must be passed at Grade C, or better, at the first attempt to continue on the honours pathway . Students who fail to achieve this grade C requirement will transfer to the BA (ordinary) Economics and Business Management degree for graduation, subject to meeting the stipulated award requirements for the BA ordinary degree.
Award Requirements
Ordinary Degrees
The BA ordinary degree will be awarded where 360 credits have been obtained, with no less than 4 courses at Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, or 10, passed at Grade D, or better.
Where a student obtains grade A in no less than five out of eight courses completed at stage 3 (SCQF level 9, or 10), the examination board will consider whether to make the award of Bachelor of Arts with distinction.
Honours Degrees:
Degree classification is based on the weighted average of marks attained in 12 Qualifying Courses of which a minimum of 4 must be C2 (Economics) courses and a minimum of 4 must be C1 (Management) courses. The 12 Qualifying Courses used for degree classification are all 8 courses taken at Stage 4 plus the set of 4 courses at SCQF Level-9 or Level-10 taken at Stage 3 that generates the highest average mark.
