Using the Library - complete all exercises and questions:

Let’s use the University Library to research counterterrorism.

1.  To begin, log in to eCampus and select Library (in the red bar).

2.  Now click on University Library.

3.  This will take you to the University Library homepage which is the best place to start you research.

Using the “Search Box Tool”

Enter the keywords counterterrorism and analysis. Now click Search. How many results did you get? ______

In the left hand column of the results page check the boxes for Items With Full Text Online and Limit to Articles From Scholarly Publications. How many results do you have now?______

Next check the box for Journal Article under Content Type. How many results now?______

Finally, place a check in the box by National Security under Subject Terms. How many results remain?______

Now use the Publication Date filter and limit your results to 2011 only. You will need to click on the Update box. What article in the results list did Todd Sandler author? ______

How many result do you see now? ______

Using “Choose Resources by Subject”.

In addition to simply using the Search Box Tool there are several other ways to do your research. Close this window and return to the homepage. Under Library Resources select Choose Resources by Subject and then Criminal Justice and Security. How many searchable databases do you find listed under the Criminal Justice and Security Resources page?

Using “Find a Specific Publication”.

Now we want to find journals that focus on counterterrorism. Go back to the library homepage by clicking the back arrow twice. There is a link on this page that will help you “find a specific publication” with the name starting with counterterrorism. How many titles did you get?______

Using “Search FAQ’s”

If you are not clear on what it means when your assignment calls for scholarly research so you go to Search FAQ’s (under Library Services) to see if someone else may have had the same Frequently Asked Question. When you search scholarly what are the three terms used synonymously in the second result title? ______

Using “Request a Specific Document”

You have been doing your research and have found an article title that seems to be perfect for your assignment but it appears the University Library does not have access to it in its collection. You decide to try Request a Specific Document (under Library Services) service. How long should it be before your request is fulfilled? ______

You have used the Search Box Tool and even some other resources found in Choose Resources by Subject but none of the results seem to be what you are looking for. So you decide to Ask a Librarian. In the past week what has been the average response time to a submitted question? ______

Citation Tip from the Library

You have been told that you will be required to use APA formatting for your papers. While doing your search you immediately liked the first three results when using the keywords counterterrorism and analysis. On the results page you select the plus button to the far right of each of the first three results. In the lower right you see Saved items (3) and click on it. Here you see an option for APA and click on it. How can you keep those citations? (hint: click email or print, you should always double check this formatting) ______
