MCJROTC FACT SHEET

FACT 1

MCJROTC stands for Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps

FACT 2

MCJROTC is a jointly-sponsored Marine Corps and secondary school citizenship and leadership education program offered to students in grades 9-12 in selected high schools.

FACT 3

MCJROTC is being offered as an elective at your high school. MCJROTC classes will be held during regular class periods of the school day.

FACT 4

MCJROTC is an educational program. Students incur no military obligation.

FACT 5

The objectives of MCJROTC are:

1)Develop informed and responsible citizens.

2)Develop leadership skills

3)Strengthen character

4)Help form habits of self-discipline

5)Develop a respect for, and an understanding of, the need for a constituted authority in a democratic society.

6)Promote an understanding of the basic elements and requirements for national security.

FACT 6

MCJROTC students are provided with uniforms, books, and training aids and other equipment paid for by the Marine Corps.

FACT 7

MCJROTC encourages participation on drill and Marksmanship teams, group athletics, and other activities. Participation in these extra curricula activities is strictly voluntary.

FACT 8

MCJROTC students take field trips to military installations and other areas to enhance classroom studies.

FACT 9

The MCJROTC program is taught by retired Marines Corps officers and enlisted personnel.

FACT 10

MCJROTC Leadership Education courses provide unique opportunities to develop the skills necessary to succeed in life. Students learn to accept increasing amounts of responsibility establish study habits and work in group settings. Classroom instruction is reinforce with practical application.

ADMINISTRATION/ORGANIZATION

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS

1. To be eligible for enrollment and continuance in aMCJROTC unit, the student must:

a. Be enrolled in, and attending, a regular course ofinstruction at the school where the unit is located.

b. Be a citizen of the United States or U.S. Nationalor alien lawfully admitted to United States for permanentresidence and in a grade above the 8th grade.

c. Be of good moral character as determined by theprincipal of the school and the SMI.

d. Be physically qualified to participate fully in theschool's physical education program. Current annualschool physical evaluations, as stated above, aremandatory for cadet participation in the program.

DISENROLLMENT

Cadets may be dis-enrolled from the MCJROTC Program for the

following reasons:

1. Academic Failure – You must pass MCJROTC in order toremain a part of it. However, disenrollment is notautomatic. Each case is reviewed and handled

separately.

2. Ineptitude – Students who consistently demonstrate aninability to develop leadership skills may bedis-enrolled.

3. Poor Attitude – Any cadet who consistently displays apoor attitude regarding the MCJROTC program may bedis-enrolled.

ACTIVITY FEES

All Cadets will be required to pay an initial activity fee of $65.00. And a subsequent fee of $40.00 for every year they participate in the JROTC program. The fees will be used to

offset the cost of the following items provided to the Cadet:

-Cadet Uniforms Items

-Cadet Spirit T-Shirt

-Uniform Care

-Cadet Picnic

-Cadet Field Trip (providing Cadet qualify to attend, i.e. behavior, grades)

-Marine Corps Ball

NOTE: Cadets will not be allowed to participate in JROTC extracurricular activities if the activity fee is not paid.

VIDEO PERMISSION

Lithia Springs High School will be engaging in a professional learning opportunity with teachers during the 2016-2017 school year that will include videoing in their classroom in an effort to increase research-based teaching practices. Each video will be used for professional learning and only viewed by certified school personnel. By signing below you understand that during videoing, your child may be included in the video and also understand that the video will not be published.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

1. At the bell, the class leader will call the class toattention. The class will come to attention and remainat the position of attention.

2. All cadets will recite the pledge of allegiance at the time appointed by the school.

3. Upon completion of roll call, the class commander willgive the command “Ready, seats”. The class will sit atthe position of attention until given the command, “Atease”. Upon the command of “at ease”, the students mayrelax at their desks, however, no talking is allowed.

4. No food, drink or gum is allowed in the classroom areaunless authorized by the SMI/MI.

5. Cadets must raise their hand to be recognized.

6. When recognized or asked a question, cadets will standup while speaking.

7. Use "Sir" or “Ma’am” while addressing or answering theSMI or MI.

8. When asking for permission or assistance, say "Please"first.

9. Do not interrupt the SMI's or MI's conversation. Waitfor acknowledgment and then say, "Excuse me, Sir/Ma’am".

10. When a request is granted, say "Thank you".

11. When the ending class bell rings, the instructor willcall on the class leader to dismiss the class. Once allstudents are in their seats, the class commander willcall the class to attention and give the command of“Dismissed”. At this time, cadets may depart the

classroom for their next class.

12. Check the desk for personal items and trash prior toleaving class. The room will be clean before leaving. Each class commander will be responsible for care andcleaning of the classroom prior to dismissing the class.

13. Bring textbooks, notebooks, and pen or pencil to everyclass. Many times cadets will be required to takenotes.

14. When entering the classroom, go directly to your seat.All socializing will take place during the passingperiod before and after class.

15. All head calls (bathroom breaks) will be made before orafter class. No head calls will be authorized duringclass except in cases of emergency.

16. Uniforms will be worn as directed by the SMI. The PTuniform required on Friday is green sweatpants, sweatshirt, shorts, t-shirt, and sneakers.

17. Each cadet is responsible for reading the dailyinformation board in order to keep informed on what isgoing on. Not reading the board is no excuse for notknowing what is required of you during the next classperiod.

18. No cadets are allowed in the Cadet Admin Office, Armory,or Supply Area without specific approval of theinstructors.

19. The office telephones are business phones only. Theymay, if absolutely necessary, be used by cadets withpermission of the SMI or MI. No routine calls may bemade from these phones. Calls may be made oncepermission is granted and must be limited to (2) twominutes.

20. Cadets are expected to conduct themselves with properdecorum at all times in school, and especially withinthe MCJROTC spaces.

ATTENDANCE

Cadets are expected to attend all JROTC functions. Thisincludes everything from daily classes to extracurricularactivities and special events. The only exceptions will be a Cadet participating in another sport or activity. Cadets should anticipate,as much as possible, when they will not be able to attend aJROTC requirement in order to let the instructors know inadvance.

CONDUCT, BEARING & DISCIPLINE

SCHOOL CITIZENSHIP

Marine Corps JROTC cadets are high school students. Theyare fully expected to conduct themselves in accordance withall school rules and regulations. Any cadet failing to

maintain higher standards of conduct and citizenship willnot be permitted to remain in the Marine Corps JROTCProgram.

PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION

Cadets will not display any gestures of affection in schoolor on school grounds. This holds especially true when inuniform and pertains to kissing, embracing, holding hands,

or other forms of intimate behavior. Affection between a manand a woman should be a private matter, and as such anydisplays of affection should be done in private. Cadets whothink they are showing off their maturity by kissing andhugging in public are only displaying a lack of maturity andrisking a lower Marine Corps JROTC leadership grade fortheir conduct.

DAILY CADET CONDUCT

Cadets will have shirts tucked inside of pants while in school.

Cadets arrive on time for class; greet the instructor on theway into class.

Cadets contribute to the class with appropriate answers toquestions.

Cadets wear appropriate clothing.

Cadets strive to improve themselves continuously.

Cadets honor their word.

Cadets demonstrate initiative by doing things without beingtold to.

Cadets remain loyal to their families, fellow cadets andstudents, their school and their community.

Cadets treat others with dignity and respect regardless ofrace, religion or gender.

Cadets take care of each other.

Cadets wear their uniforms proudly and with distinction.

Cadets maintain appropriate military haircuts.

Cadets do not smoke or wear hats on school grounds.

Cadetsrespond to with adults with a "Yes, or No Sir or Ma'am.

Cadets do not lie, cheat or steal.

Cadets use appropriate language and do not curse or swear.

Cadets do not use drugs.

Cadets offer suggestions to improve the system.

Cadets maintain a can-do attitude.

Cadets respect public and private property.

Cadets respect public laws and regulations.

CURRICULUM / ACADEMICS

SCHOOL ACADEMICS

All Marine Corps JROTC cadets are required to maintain asatisfactory grade point average (GPA) in all their schoolsubjects in order to remain in the MCJROTC program.

Failure to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, as determined by the SMIand approved by the principal, will put the cadet onimmediate probation during the next semester. If this

happens the cadet may be limited in what activities he orshe may participate. If the cadet fails to raise his or hergrade to the required level during the next semester, thecadet will be dis-enrolled from MCJROTC and required to turn inall uniforms and stop any participation in MCJROTC. If thecadet raises his or her GPA during the probationary period,the cadet will be allowed to resume full activities.

CADET CURRICULUM

Leadership Education is the name of the MCJROTC curriculumbecause we use the tenants of Marine Corps leadership toteach and develop a sense of responsibility, loyalty,

discipline and character in cadets. Throughout the fouryears of the program, the Leadership Education curriculum inpresented by way of five different categories of

instruction. Those categories are: (1.) Leadership and Citizenship, (2.)Marksmanship, (3.) Personal Growth and Responsibility, (4.)Public Service and Career Exploration, and (5.) GeneralMilitary Subjects to include Drill and Physical Training.

CADET PARTICIPATION

Cadets of the MCJROTC Program will participate in aLeadership Education level as dictated by the number ofyears in the program the cadet has completed. Naturally,

LE-1 is for those students entering the program for thefirst time, while LE-4 is for the cadets who havesuccessfully completed LE-I through LE-3.

1. LEADERSHIP EDUCATION I (LE-I)

The first year of the program provides cadets with anintroduction to both leadership and citizenship. The firstyear also gives the new cadets exposure to personal growthand responsibility and establishes a foundation of militarystructure and tradition.

2. LEADERSHIP EDUCATION II (LE-II)

Builds on the instruction provided during the first year. While continuing to provide more advanced instruction in all areas, it provides more in-depth instruction in Leadership and group dynamics. Cadets begin to function in leadership roles and experience the day to day responsibilities of leadership.

3. LEADERSHIP TRAINING III (LE-III)

LE-III, cadets will begin to use their leadershiptraining as they assume positions of increased authorityand responsibility within the program. In this year also,detailed instruction on personnel inspections is presented, aswell as other preparation for life beyond high school.

4. LEADERSHIP TRAINING IV (LE-IV)

LE-4 is a year when cadets really bring together all theirprevious learning experiences in the MCJROTC program. Senior cadets will conduct formations and inspections, aswell as supervise certain training events with youngercadets. LE-4 cadets continued to be challenged academicallywith requirements for research projects and independentstudies and progress reports.

GRADING

Cadets of Marine Corps JROTC will be graded in multipleareas of the program. The academic curriculum portion of theprogram will be graded very much like other traditional highschool classes. However, as part of their overall MCJROTCgrade, cadets will also be observed, evaluated and graded ontheir leadership performance. Leadership performance willencompass carrying out one’s cadet duties and it will alsocover participation in citizenship activities and otherMCJROTC activities.

UNIFORMS:25%Excused absences receive 100% credit if made up within required

time limit. Unexcused absences can receive a maximum of 75

points if made up within the time limit.

QUIZ/TESTS:20%Test will include CDAs’. All Cadets will be given 1 day to for

makeup quizzes for each day absent.

HOMEWORK: 5%Will be graded according to the grading scale. All homework

assignments are expected to be completed.

PT:15%Dress and participation: 100%

Participation, not in proper uniform: 50

For each P/T item missing: 10 pt deduction

No dress, no participation: zero

Sick with gear: excused

DRILL:15% Must participate in armed and unarmed drill on a weekly basis.

Drill movements will be evaluated and graded weekly. A grade for participation and an evaluation grade.

FINAL: 20%The SLO Testing will be administered at the end of the school year on all the knowledge taught throughout the year. Grade will be factored into the Cadet’s final grade.

RANK & PROMOTION

Cadet Rank Structure

The rank structure used in Marine Corps JROTC is mirroredafter the officer and enlisted ranks in the U. S. MarineCorps. The following ranks (with corresponding billets) areutilized, depending on the size of the unit.

a. Cadet Colonel/Lieutenant Colonel – Cadet BattalionCommander

c. Cadet Captain – Cadet Company Commander, S-1Administrative Officer, S-3 Operations Officer, S-4Logistics Officer

Cadet Promotions

1. Promotions are an honor and a privilege. Those cadetsreceiving promotions must possess the prerequisite abilitiesand skills. Primary authority for promotions rests with theSenior Marine Instructor. Cadets returning from theprevious school year will normally be promoted to a higherrank, providing their last quarter conduct and grades meetthe criteria below.

a. Promotions are based on demonstrated leadershipability, academic, and disciplinary excellence. The minimumstandards for any promotion is to have a current grade point

average (GPA) of “2.0”, and to have passed the YouthPhysical Fitness Test (YPFT) in the current grading period.

b. Cadets being considered for promotion to CadetCorporal or Cadet Sergeant, must possess a current GPA of“2.0” or higher. For promotion to Cadet Staff Sergeant or

higher, the cadet must have a current GPA of “2.5” orhigher. All cadet officers and staff noncommissionedofficers are required to maintain a minimum GPA of “2.5” toretain their rank.

c. Cadet officers and staff noncommissioned officersthat do not meet the minimum GPA of “2.5” will be placed ina probationary status for the following semester. The cadet

will have one grading period to meet the standard for rankretention or be considered for reduction. Cadets failing tomaintain a GPA of “2.0” may not hold a rank higher than

Cadet Private.

d. Cadets failing to perform their duties in anefficient manner will be considered for reduction.

e. Requests for waivers to the above promotion criteriawill be submitted to the Senior Military Instructor.

2. Cadets may be promoted to commissioned officer ranksduring their senior year; staff noncommissioned officerranks during their junior year; and noncommissioned officer

ranks during their sophomore year. Cadets in the ninthgrade will normally serve in the ranks of Cadet Privatethrough Cadet Lance Corporal.

3. Reappointment

a. Cadets who departed for disciplinary reasons or werewithdrawn in lieu of disciplinary action, and accepted forreenrollment will be appointed Cadet Privates, regardless of

rank previously held.

b. Cadets who departed for other reasons and acceptedfor reenrollment may be appointed to a grade one rank lowerthan that previously held if absence from the program was a

period of one school year or less.

APPEARANCE & UNIFORMS

HAIR

Hair of male cadets will be tapered in the back withsideburns no longer than the orifice of the ear, neatlytrimmed. Hair will not fall over the ears or eyebrows andthe hair on top will not interfere with normal wear of themilitary cover. Male cadets will always be clean-shavenexcept that a moustache may be worn if neatly trimmed.

Hair of female cadets when in uniform will be pinned andarranged so that it will not fall below the collar of theuniform being worn. Hair will not be worn in such a way thatthe uniform cover cannot be worn properly.

EARRINGS

Women cadets may wear small, polished earrings, ball orround stud type with all uniforms except camouflage. Earrings must not exceed ¼ inch in diameter. Only one

earring per ear is authorized. Earrings may not be wornwhile participating in parades, reviews or ceremonies.

Male cadets will not wear earrings or facial makeup while in uniform.

UNIFORM OF THE DAY

The Marine Corps JROTC program requires that cadets weartheir uniform at least one day a week. The Senior MarineInstructor will establish what day of the week cadets shouldwear their uniforms. Any time a cadet wears his or heruniform, it should always be worn with pride and care. Cadets must always be careful to be on their best behavior

when wearing their uniforms. Improper behavior by cadets isnot tolerated at any time, and is severely dealt with if inuniform.

CONDUCT IN UNIFORM
