19th International competition of young pianists in Valmiera

Statutes

The competition is being organised by the Music school of Valmiera in cooperation with the Valmiera Cultural Center and the city hall of Valmiera.

The competition will take place on Wednesday, the 29th of January 2014, in the concert hall of the Valmiera Cultural Center.

Rules of the competition

Students of the Piano subject from music schools with the Keyboard playing – Piano educational programme may take part in this competition if they have prepared the competition programme. The age restriction is between 6 and 15 years (including) of age.

The competitors will be split into 4 age groups:

Group A 6-8 years(including)

Group B 9-10 years(including)

Group C 11-12 years(including)

Group D 13-15 years(including)

The cutoff date for determining the age of a particular participant is set to be the 29th (including) of January 2014.

The entrance fee that each participant must pay is set to be 15 EUR. The amount must be transferred to the account listed below before the deadline which is at the 29th of January, 2014. You must attach a reference saying 'pianistu konkurss'.

The participants of the competition shall perform wearing suitable competition attire and shoes.

Aims of the competition

To encourage and develop the creative and professional development of young pianists.

To improve the performance skills of the students as well as gain performance experience.

To further the pianists' interest in music.

To advance the quality of learning processes in music schools.

To create an experience exchange and repertoire enrichment school for teachers of music.

Programme of the competition

Group A:

1. A piece composed during the period of classicism.

2. Two pieces by a composer from the country that the participant. represents. They must be opposite in their nature and can be either an original work by a composer of the same country as the competitor or an arrangement of a traditional folksong.

Group B:

1. A Rondo composed during the period of classicism.

2. Two pieces by a composer from the country that the participant represents. They must be opposite in their nature and can be either an original work by a composer of the same country as the competitor or an arrangement of a traditional folksong.

Group C:

1. The first part of a sonata or a sonatina composed during the period of classicism.

2. Two pieces by a composer from the country that the participant represents. They must be opposite in their nature and can be either an original work by a composer of the same country as the competitor or an arrangement of a traditional folksong.

Group D:

1. The first part of a sonata (allegro) by J. Haidn, W.A.Mozart or

L. Beethoven.

2. One piece by a composer from the country that the participant represents. The piece can be either an original work by a composer of the same country as the competitor or an arrangement of a traditional folksong.

3. A masterly piece or a masterly concert etude.

No submissions with the goal in mind of altering the programme of the competition will not be accepted.

The pieces included in the programme of the competition must be performed by heart.

Application procedure

The submission form (appendix) must be sent in electronically to Ritma Petersone () till the 15th of January 2014. Attached to this form there must be:

  • a copy of either a passport or a birth certificate;
  • the bank account specification of the payee indicating the number of participants and the name of the music school they represent. This will be used to write up a bill and send it to the payee..

In case of a participant not taking part in the competition after meeting all the entry requirements, the entry fee will not be returned.

Competition procedure

The competition shall be an open one - all persons interested may attend and listen to the performances.

The competitors will play on a raffle draw basis which will take place on the 29th of January, 2014.

The time that the competition will commence on as well as the times of the performances of each group, rehearsals and the raffle itself will be sent to the participants on the 23rd of January, 2014.

Assessment

The performances will be evaluated by a jury composed of three members. The members of the comission will be determined by the principal of the Valmiera music school.

The comission has the right to request the sheet music of the performers from their respective music schools with an advance notice of 3 days. In such a case, the material itself must be submitted on the day of the competition.

The basis for assessment is a 25 point scale.

The jury will assess each participant according to the base criteria outlined in this document.

The criteria:

  • the accuracy of the music sheet;
  • comprehension of the content of the piece and artistic performance;
  • technical skill, artistic performance and general performance culture of a participant;
  • the suitability of a piece given the age group of a participant;
  • the suitability of the programme with respect to the statutes of this competition

The assessment determined by the jury is final and is cannot be disputed.

Awards ceremony

Winning participants from each age group taking part in the competition will be awarded a winners diploma for the first, second or third place. Other participants will be able to receive a diploma or a material/monetary prize for their efforts. Each of the aforementioned awards may be awarded to one or many persons or not awarded to anyone at all. Special prizes may be awarded as well.
