May 16: The transition from beef cattle production to growing strawberries is a major learning curve for John Williams, but in the last two years that sweet crop is one of his main consumer draws at his Mason County roadside market, “The Garden on 68.” Williams has joined and is a big fan of Farm Bureau’s “certified” market program.

May 17: A follow-up report today with Rebecca Woods, coordinator of the Kentucky Regional Food Processing Center in Jackson County, where they’re hosting an open house next Tuesday, May 24. Woods says a special guest will be a Madison County farmer who’s use he center’s facilities to process and package a new food product that they are now selling at Kroger stores.

May 18: The Kentucky Sheep and Fiber Festival is on tap for this Saturday and Sunday at Lexington’s Masterson Station Park. Kelley Yates the Kentucky Sheep and Goat Development Office provides details of this multi-purpose event which provides training and workshops for farmers and artisans, and a whole lot of fun for families who stop by to check out the fun.

May 19: Feldhaus introduces, Dr. David Williams, the newly appointed director of RCARS, UK’s Robinson Center for Appalachian Resource Sustainability, in Breathitt County. Williams is looking into a closer connection between the center’s Wood Utilization Center and regional community and technical college offerings.

May 13: For one Meade County farmer, Fred L. Sipes, who in addition to farming is talking the talk, walking the walk, and “burning the bean.” He utilizes B-20 a 20% soy diesel fuel blend in all of his farm equipment. He’s also involved in the Ky Soybean Association’s efforts to reach out to technical schools with an education program for diesel technicians.
