We are recruiting entry level and experienced engineers for career opportunities in Birmingham, Alabama

JOB SUMMARY:

Southern Power and its subsidiaries own or have the rights to 46 facilities operating or under construction in 11 states with more than 12,600 MW of generating capacity in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Texas. This position is in the SPC Commercial Optimization and Trading (CO&T) group within the SPC Commercial Operations organization and reports to the SPC Project Manager. It is responsible for managing the commercial and contractual terms of Power Purchase Agreements (PPA’s) with other utilities including: contract implementation, optimization, invoice verification, customer service, and market expertise. The analyst must understand, analyze, and effectively communicate the effects of market dynamics and market structure on the commercial terms of existing and potential PPA’s, with markets extending across the continental United States.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

·  Bachelor’s degree in Engineering in indicated discipline from an ABET accredited university

·  Minimum GPA of 3.0 preferred

·  US Citizen or Permanent Resident

·  Some overnight travel to customer and plant locations required

·  Shared on-call duties with other CO&T employees on a rotating basis

EDUCATION:

·  Any Engineering Degree with a business focus/minor **Engineer degree must be from an ABET accredited college/university**

·  Quantitative Finance

·  Mathematics

·  Economic/Statics

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

·  High level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel and with other Microsoft Office products is required

·  Strong technical skills, analytical skills, interpersonal skills, verbal and written communications skills

·  Self-motivation and demonstrated initiative is crucial for this position

·  Knowledge of wholesale power markets, FERC policies, transmission access (scheduling, point of delivery, curtailment) is desired

·  Ability to interface with customers, vendors and contractors while representing the best interests of Southern Company

·  Ability to work effectively with others in a fast paced, deadline oriented team environment

·  Creative thinking, with a focus on finding optimal solutions to complex issues across various markets, technologies, and contract structures

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

·  Provide market, financial, and risk analyses/optimization for natural gas, biomass, solar, and wind generating resources

·  Manage the physical, financial, and operational activities associated with existing SPC Power Purchase Agreements with other utilities

o  Develop and maintain good customer relationships and resolve contractual disputes that may arise.

o  Support regular and ad hoc energy margin reporting processes by performing detailed analysis and clearly communicating findings in a timely manner

·  Provide contractual and operational support in the due diligence process for new business and acquisition opportunities for various technologies in different regions across the U.S.

o  Proactively qualify and quantify contractual and operational risks.

o  Effectively communicate findings to a variety of audiences, including all levels of management.

·  Maintain and optimize analytical tools as needed to perform and/or improve work product and efficiency

·  Must demonstrate a commitment to safety
