PROGRAM

Terry Hannan stopped by today to talk about DeKalb County’s Forest Preserves. Terry started by telling a couple of short stories about his youth in the local parks. The Forest Preserve’s mission is to maintain and expand open space for “passive” recreation – fishing, sledding, camping, hiking, biking, picknicking, birding, etc. We have 17 forest preserves in the county. Habitat preservation, soil conservation, water quality – that’s what it’s all about. The forests themselves due a lot to protect and maintain our environment – water, soil and air. The NW suburban astronomers hold their meetings at Afton, because the suburbs are just too darned lit up. They have lots of programs designed to get kids away from electronics and back outdoors. Kish and NIU biology, geology and art classes use the Preserves. The Forest Preserves also include prairie maintenance, what with that being the natural state around here. They do lots of burns to keep out invasive species that would be the death of the praries. Prairie Oaks is the newest preserve, off Cherry Valley Road. We’ve got good mussels in the Kishwaukee River. Who knew? Joe Pasteris showed up in one of Terry’s pictures, helping out. Terry talked a lot about birds as well. He thinks there are six bald eagles living in DeKalb County.

Heard around the tables:

Everyone seems to be forgetting about Jennie. How can that be??

Quotes for the day
