6th Grade Time Capsule Assignment
Goal – To create a time capsule that will allow you to choose primary sources from your own life that will help you see how much you will change in middle school.
What is a primary source?
A primary source is a document or physical object which was written or created during the time under study. These sources were present during an experience or time period and offer an inside view of a particular event. Some types of primary sources include:
- ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS (excerpts or translations acceptable): Diaries, speeches, manuscripts, letters, interviews, news film footage, autobiographies, official records
- CREATIVE WORKS: Poetry, drama, novels, music, art
- RELICS OR ARTIFACTS: Pottery, furniture, clothing, buildings
Assignment
- Complete the attached questionnaire. Answer the questions as they apply to you now.
- Choose five different primary sources that somehow pertain to your life at this time. One of the primarysources has to be a recent photograph (we will take these in class with the Ipad). Examples: dated newspaper articles, dated receipts of important purchases, dated copies of diary entries, dated letters from someone special, etc. (You may include more items if you would like).
- Decorate a manila folder with your first and last name (and class on the tab) and other sayings, words, pictures, etc. that you feel represent you right now, and place the artifacts into the envelope. Tape the side of the folder before you decorate it.
- At school, we will measure your height with a string of yarn, place the yarn in the envelope and seal it. We will open the envelopes at the end of your 8th grade school year.
