Current Events: In the Skoolbo World Cup Challenge, the USA came in 2nd to Australia, and we were 1st in the USA for the 2nd year in a row!!! We enjoyed having our families to join us for lunch yesterday. Autumn’s Mimi, Anne Czaplinski, treated us to candy canes. On another note, your child does not need to bring a gift for others in the classroom. I will have a gift to give each student in our room when we have our class party. When your child returns from winter break, we will be assessing computation, counting to 100 in 1 minute, recognizing numerals 0-20 (80 random numbers to read in 1 minute), knowing the greater number in a pair, and naming the missing number in a 3 number sequence ( _, 13, 14 or 9,_, 11, or 15, 16, _). Plus, our mid-year PALS assessment will begin on Jan. 5th. They have been so excited in making this surprise for you over the past few months. I hope that you will display and use your one-of-a-kind gift.

Language Arts:We’ve practiced and reviewed upper case letter strokes Z. Writing cards to our families, making Jayce’s birthday book wishes, listening to more Jan Brett stories, and writing the story of how to catch a gingerbread man were other language arts activities that we did this week.

Math:We are learning a game to build the foundation for the children having an understanding of base 10. If your child is still unable to skip count by 5’s to 100, please practice this at home. This will be a necessary skill for upcoming chapters in counting money with dimes and nickels. Plus, I’ll be assessing skip counting by 5’s and 2’s and counting down from 30 for SOL and report card progress. Please continue to work on addition and subtraction facts to 20. Our 2 minute drill on Thursday showed only 2 students making any progress, which I know that getting the children to focus and concentrate at this time of year is challenging! Please use my portaportal, which is found on the BME homepage, over the holidays to practice math facts. We will do the 2 minute timed computation that involves addition and subtraction facts again in early January.

Science: The children read about evergreen trees in their Scholastic News: “Green all Winter,” and then using the text to find the facts to support true or false statements from the article.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

Our whole class was treated to ice cream on Wednesday! Our friend, Taylor Sragovitz, was so generous and paid for everyone to get ice cream.

We appreciate the families who are providing for our Winter Party on Tuesday. A huge thanks to Mrs. Sragovitz for arranging our class party AND for baking our gingerbread boy & girl cookies. Many families helped to make this a special activity for our class. Thanks to the deVore family for the juice boxes and icing, to the Czaplinski family for the M&M’s and chocolate chips, the Caledonia family for the 2 bags of wrapped candy, to the Smith family for the M & M’s and sprinkles, and to the Sragovitz for the plates, napkins, & ice cream cups. The children will have a fun icing and decorating their gingerbread boys and girls on Monday. Plus, thanks to Mr. Sragovitz for coming in on Monday to assist us!

Birthday Wishes go out to …Brilan Pendry, whose birthday is on Monday, Dec. 26 and then to Jayce Carpenter, who will turn 7 on Wednesday, Dec. 28th. We hope that you both celebrate and enjoy special times with your families over the holidays!

Merry Christmas

Happy New Year!
