CASTING BREAKDOWN

Female 1: The Genie/ Guard / Market Trader / Servant and as cast

Playing age irrelevant. Energy, charisma and sheer chutzpah far more useful. A playful relationship with the audience. Excellent comic timing. Will need to learn some simple magic. Any circus skills e.g. juggling an advantage but not essential.

Female 2: The Princess / Market Trader and as cast

Playing age late teens to mid-20s. Lonely, isolated and reserved initially, she’s suspicious of everyone’s motives, unable to trust people. Warms up, falls in love, and ends up saving the day.

Female 3: Mum / Market Trader and as cast

Playing age forties to fifties. Working class northerner, hard-working and usually fairly cheerful. Warm and loving, great sense of humour. Some musical ability a plus, particularly percussion or guitar.

Male 1: Aladdin

Playing age late teens to mid-20s. Working class northerner. The boy next door. Sweet and loving but not really up to much, it seems – his mum is desperate for him to sort himself out, find a job. Finds his inner hero rather late in the story.

Male 2: Sultan / Uncle / Market Trader and as cast

Playing age late forties to early sixties. The Sultan is a loving father; the Uncle is our baddie, a doer of dark deeds and maker of Machiavellian plans. Charismatic, we love to hate him. Some musical ability a plus, particularly percussion or guitar.
