Course Description:
Semester 1 topics include functions (linear, absolute value, greatest integer, quadratic, trigonometric, polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic), their graphs, inverses and other relationships; mathematical modeling (data analysis); conic sections; review and extension of trigonometry and advanced algebra topics; applications of all of the above. Traditional paper/pencil skills as well as graphing calculator activities will be emphasized.
Semester 2 will begin a three semester AP Calculus BC sequence. Topics will include limits, derivatives, integrals, and their applications.
Required Materials:
- Textbook: Addison Wesley - PreCalculus
- Notebook, folder, and writing instrument
- Graphing Calculator (TI 84)
Laptop Use Policy:
Students are expected to bring their Macbook with them to class every day, fully charged, and in the provided case. Laptops will be used to work on math activities as directed by the teacher and should only be used for appropriate academic purposes. Distracting activities including, but not limited to, web browsing, checking email, or instant messaging are disruptive to the learning environment and are not acceptable uses of the laptop during class time. Students are expected to abide by the district’s Technology Appropriate Use Policy. Any inappropriate use of the computers will result in loss of the computer privileges and additional consequences.
Attendance: Daily attendance is very important!
Absences: If you miss class, it is YOUR responsibility to turn in your homework and find out what you missed from me or a friend, Please make up the work as soon as possible. (This is to your benefit!) Please contact me to arrange a make-up tests. In general, you will be allowed the amount of days you missed plus one to make up the work. Unexcused absences will result in detentions according to the student handbook.
Tardies: Please be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings. Repeat offenders will be issued detentions.
GRADING: Your grade will be weighted as follows:
Tests/Quizzes (95%): One or two quizzes and a test will be given each chapter/unit.
Many tests and quizzes have a calculator and a non-calculator portion. Test retakes will be offered at your teacher's discretion and will be limited to 1 retake per semester.
Homework (5%) : Homework will be assigned daily and corrected the following day. Assigned papers should be checked for grammar and spelling.
Semester Examswill be composed of 20% of the Final Semester Grade.
Grading Scale: 90 – 100% = A 80 - 89% = B 70 - 79% = C 60 - 69% = D 0 – 59% = F
Online Grades: Grades will be updated periodically and can be accessed via the
Barrington website.
Extra Help:
Math Resource Center (MRC) – Staffed by a math teacher and student tutors. Please visit the resource center during your free period/lunch to get extra help with topics with which you are struggling or wish to review. Make sure you bring your book and notes.
Mrs. Moraris -You are always welcome to see me during periods 2,3, 6, or before school for extra help. If possible, let me know when you’re coming.
Academic Honesty: Any student caught cheating, copying, or falsely claiming illness to avoid class will be subject to a penalty according to the student handbook.
