UNIT TITLE / Routinely maintain swimming pool cleaning and vacuumingsystems
APPLICATION / This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to routinely maintain swimming pool and spa cleaning and vacuuming systems in a range of workplace contexts.
It applies to swimming pool and spa technicians and related industry professionals and specialists responsible for maintaining swimming pool and spa cleaning and vacuuming systems.
It includes preparing for routine maintenance to swimming pool cleaning and vacuuming systems, maintaining manifests, carrying out routine maintenance and repairs, and completing maintenance activities.
It supports those with limited supervisory responsibilities who perform their routine maintenance duties alone or in a team environment.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of endorsement.

1. / Prepare for work / 1.1 / Identify and confirm routine maintenance task requirements with supervisor or client.
1.2 / Review requirements of legislation relating to the routine swimming pool and spa cleaning and vacuum systems maintenance task, includingSafety Data Sheets (SDS).
1.3 / Identify and assess risk and hazards and apply risk control measures.
2. / Carry out routine maintenance of swimming pool cleaning and vacuuming systems. / 2.1 / Obtain access to workplace site.

PERFORMANCE EVIDENCE
A person must demonstrate the ability to safely conduct the routine maintenance in two different occasions of cleaning and vacuuming systems of each ofone swimming pool and one spa.
Performance must include:
  • identifying and assessing risks associated with maintaining cleaning and vacuuming systems for swimming pools and spas
  • communicating with clients and supervisors using electronic and paper systems
  • manually handling routine maintenance tools and equipment
  • safely storing and maintaining tools and equipment
  • recording of inventory and manifest according to legislation

KNOWLEDGE EVIDENCE
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must have knowledge of:
  • key workplace health and safety requirement (WHS) and relevant environmental legislations, including the Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace Code of Practice
  • enterprise policies and procedures, including including interpreting work orders and reporting problems
  • safety data sheets (SDS)
  • emergency responses relating to hazardous materials and chemicals
  • selection and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • processes for risk assessment and controlling risks in routine maintenance of swimming pools and spas cleaning and vacuum systems, including: chemical hazards, electrical hazards, bacteria, viruses, bodily fluids, contaminated water and surfaces, heights, confined spaces
  • maintenance processes and procedures
  • equipment and tools, including:

ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS
Assessors must satisfy the requirements for assessors contained in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations.
Assessment of performance must be undertaken in the workplace or in a simulated workplace environment. Tasks are to be performed to the level of proficiency and within the time limits that would be expected in a workplace.
Assessors are responsible for ensuring that candidates have access to current industry-standard:
  • documents, task instructions, safety data sheets (SDS) materials, tools, equipment
  • relevant legislation, regulatory standards and codes
