Internshipsprovideextraordinaryopportunities forstudentstotesttheir classroomknowledgeinrealworldsituations,todeveloprelationships with professionalsinthefield,andtogaintangibleskillsinafieldoftheirchoosing.To facilitateeffectiveandrewardinginternshipexperiencesforbothstudentsand hostorganizations,theColinPowellSchoolhasdevelopedguidelinesthatprepare studentsfortheworkplaceandkeephostsupervisors informedofprogram expectations.
What WeAskof Organizations
Hostorganizations providerichlearningopportunitiesforstudents,supervisors who canalsoactasaprofessionalmentors,and aprojectorseriesoftasksfrom whichthestudentcanlearn. Inordertomaketheinternship aproductive experienceforboththestudentandthehostorganization, weaskthat organizationsinterestedinhostingan interntakethefollowingsteps:
1.Identifyasupervisorwhocanprovideguidanceandmentorshipoverthe courseoftheinternship.
2.Identifyaprojectoradiscreteseriesofmeaningfultasksthatcan reasonablybeconcludedinthecourseofeighttotwelveweeks.
3. Providea thoroughevaluationofboththestudent’sandyourexperiences withtheColinPowellSchool.Supervisorswhohavequestionsorconcerns abouta student’sjob performanceareencouragedtocontactColinPowell Schoolstaff(contactinformationbelow).
What WeAskof Students
Studentsareexpectedtoactasprofessionalemployeesatalltimes. Theyare requiredtosetprofessional learninggoals,toevaluatetheirprogresstoward meetingthosegoals,tobeformallyevaluatedbytheirsupervisors, andtomeet theexpectationslaidoutinthejobdescriptionprovidedbythehostorganization. Weaskstudentstolearnandadapttothecultureoftheworkplace, andtoask questionswhennormsorexpectationsare unclear.

Inordertobethoroughlypreparedfortheirinternshipexperience,weask studentsto:
1.Meettheexpectations laidoutinthepositiondescription,especiallywith regardstodeliverables, assignments, ongoingtasks,skillacquisition, attendance atevents,andparticipationinworkshopsorprofessional developmentseminars.
2.Keepthehoursoftheoffice. Students shouldberegardedasregular employees,andofficehoursshouldbeagreeduponinadvance.Studentsare expectedtoarriveontimeandbemindfulthattasksmayhavetobecompleted outsideofregularofficehours,ifrequiredto“getthejobdone.”Weexpectthat mostinternshipswilllastbetweentenandtwelveweeksfortenhoursperweek.
3.Participateinthesitevisit,andmaintainaprofessionaljournal.Aspartoftheir internshiprequirements,studentswillbeaskedtokeepaprofessionaljournal andtoparticipateinanonlineblogabouttheirexperience.Allstudentsexpect
routineandregularfeedbackfromtheirsupervisors.
