PRACTICAL NURSINGAPPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Belowarethe generaladmissionsrequirementsforallhealthprograms followedbytheprogram specificrequirements.Please keepinmindthatadmissiontoallhealthprogramsisa two-phase process: (1) Application to SPCC and (2) Application to Practical Nursing.

PHASE I: Complete your SPCC Admissions File

Step 1.Complete the SPCCCollege Application at

 Application to SPCC must be within two semesters of the deadline for Practical Nursingoryou must have been continuously enrolled at SPCC for the last year. (Continuous enrollment means that you have been enrolled at SPCC and have not stopped out for any reason. On your application to SPCC, you can apply only to one health program (Practical Nursing).

Step 2.Submitofficialhighschool transcript or highschoolequivalenttranscript

Graduating high school seniors will be considered with unofficial high school transcripts pending proof of successful graduation. Official transcripts must be submitted after graduation.

  • If you have a bachelor’s degree or higher, the high school transcript will be waived upon receipt of college transcript showing conferred degree.

A TranscriptEvaluation Request FormmustbecompletedandsenttotheRegistrar for evaluationofpriorcoursecredit every time a transcript is submitted.

Allforeigntranscripts(secondaryandpost-secondary)mustbeevaluatedbyan SPCC recognized evaluationcompany atthe student’s expense. For specific details, see International Transcript Credit information in the College catalog.

Step 4.Preparefor and taketheCollegePlacementTest (CPT)

  • You have one opportunity to takethe CPT (English and Math). The initial test is free. Students are strongly encouraged to thoroughly review CPT study material prior to taking the CPT. All placement test scores are good for five (5) years. All students are required to take the CPT unless exempt by a waiver. CPT Waivers can be found on the SPCC website.

PHASE II: Practical NursingProgram Requirements

Step 1.HavevalidCollegePlacement Test(CPT) scores:

  • DRE score of 151 or higher AND

Mastery in DMA 010 through 050 (score of 7 or higher in each DMA)

OR

  • Completion within five (5) years of program application deadline of:

DRE 096 through DRE 098 ANDDMA 010 through 050

Step 2.Current certification as Nursing Assistant I. All students must pass state exam and be listed on the North Carolina NAI registry prior to March 16 deadline. NOTE: Nurse Assistant I program must be state-approved with theory, lab, and clinical components.

Step 3.Take the ATI TEAS test within two (2) years of the application packet deadline. You must score at least a 65 on TEAS V or ATI TEAS to be considered for Admission.

Step 4.All course work must be at least a “C”; but your program GPA must be at least a 2.5 to be considered for admission (see page 5 for directions on GPA calculation).

How do I apply for admission to the Practical Nursing(PN) program?

  • CompletePHASE I and II of the admission requirements (page 3-4).
  • Collectrequireddocumentslistedon the PN application pages (page 9-10).
  • PutthePN application pages and all proof documentsintoamanilaenvelope.
  • Printyour full name,SPCCID,andPractical Nursing clearlyin the upper right corner and submit packet to the Admissions Office by close of businessMarch 16, 2018.

When are students admitted into the Practical Nursing program?

  • StudentsareadmittedFallsession each year.
  • There is no waitlist and selection is based on highest points earned (TEAS Score).
  • All health programs have limited seats, competitive admissions.
  • If all seats are not filled, the application period may be extended. Any extension will be posted on

How do I take the TEAS test?

  • You must create an ATI username/password prior to testing at
  • Select South Piedmont CC ADN as institution.
  • After your ATI account is created, you schedule the test and pay through SPCC.
  • SPCC testing appointmentscan be made online at
  • SPCC student cost is $65; non-SPCC student cost is $85 (fee subject to change) paid to SPCC Business Office on the phone or in person.
  • Must present a photo ID, receipt, and know ATI login at testing appointment.
  • Can be taken once every 3 months.

How will I know if I’m accepted into the Practical Nursing program?

Withinamonthoftheprogramapplication deadline,you will receive notification ofyourprovisionalacceptanceby mail.ONCEYOURECEIVE THIS LETTER,you must:

  • Complete any steps listed in your provisional acceptance letter by the deadline.
  • Attend twoMANDATORYPractical Nursingorientations to be held in April and July. Current Healthcare Provider or Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certificationmust be completed and current CPR cards must be submitted to the Administrative Assistant, Allied Health and Nursing, prior to or at the July orientation.
  • SubmittheStudentMedicalFormforNorthCarolinaCommunityCollegeSystem Institutions.NOTE:Any medical exam or immunization costistheresponsibilityofthe student. Specific instructions and deadline for completing the form will be emailed within one week of SPCC receiving your confirmationacceptance of your program seat.

Applicants accepted for admission into the Practical Nursingprogram may be required to complete a criminal background check and a drug screen. Cost is the responsibility of the student. Based on the results of the criminal background check and the drug screen, hospitals or clinical facilities where you will participate in onsite training may deny you access to their facility, resulting in your inability to complete the clinical portion of the Practical Nursingprogram. If you are unable to complete the clinical portion of your training, you will be unable to progress in the program; therefore, resulting in your removal from the program.

How do I calculate my GPA?

Onlyuseyourcompletedgeneraleducationcourses listedbelow. If you’verepeatedacourse,usethehighestgradeforcalculations.Transfercreditiscalculated usingthe gradeearned atyourpreviouscollege and only credits officially transferred by the SPCC Registrar will be used.You must submit a new Transcript Evaluation Request every time a new transcript is submitted.Gradesandcredithourscanbeobtained fromyour GO account or the transfer credit report emailed to you when your credits were transferred.CLEP and AP creditisnotcalculated intoyourGPA. GPA is calculated using two decimal places and is not rounded.
