New Course Proposal Form

This form is to be filled out for all new courses. The phrase “new course” means any course to be added to the Georgetown College Bulletin and all reorganizations of, or major changes in, courses listed in the Bulletin. This proposal must be presented to the Curriculum Committee by mid term of the semester preceding the first offering of the proposed course.

A.  DESCRIPTION OF NEW COURSE

2)  Title of Course: Hispanic Women Writers

3)  Semester hours credit: 3

4)  Exact Bulletin description of course:
This course will give students the basic knowledge about Hispanic women writers from various countries and time periods. We will read different literary genres (narrative, theatre, poetry) and discuss numerous themes and issues tackled by these writers. All discussions, readings, participation, homework, written papers and presentations will be in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPA 230 and 235, or demonstrated reading proficiency.

This course will offer insights into the history and development of various Spanish speaking countries by means of the writings of women writers. The femine perspective on important events and eras will be considered.

5)  How does this course fit into the curriculum? That is, how will the introduction of this course affect the College Bulletin? (Is it to be required in any major or minor? Is it to be an allied course in any major or minor? Will it meet any general education requirement?)
This is not a required course but one of a series of courses available to the student to fulfill the requirements for a Spanish major.

C.  FACULTY AND STUDENTS FOR THE NEW COURSE

1)  Which faculty are qualified to teach this course? (List qualifications like graduate study, interest, previous experience teaching similar courses, planned study to prepare to teach this course, etc.)
Emily Stow will teach the course. She holds a PhD in Hispanic Women Writers and currently teaches a survey course which includes literary selections by women writers. She has previously taught this material in a topics course.

2)  What is the expected student interest in this course? (How frequently will the course be offered--each semester, each fall only, spring only, summer only, alternate falls, etc. and what is the expected enrollment?)
The course will be offered as needed, probably every three to four years. Enrollment is expected at 8 to 10 students.

3)  Will the addition of this course require any increase in faculty load? If so, will this increase be met with new personnel, overload work for current, part-time faculty or other arrangement (please explain)?
No increase in faculty load.
