Course Description:
Welcome to LJCHSDigital Communications. This course assumes no prior knowledge of components of journalism. This course is a CTE class constructed around the learning the basics of photojournalism: journalistic writing, photography, computer layout & design, and advertising through the process of creating and publishing an online though multiple formats.
Students are involved in the publication of the school's newspaper while learning and applying techniques of layout work, publications, copy writing, and photography/videography. Students are assigned to produce different sections of the newspaper and other campus publications.
Note: Participation in after-school activities is required and mandatory. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Intro to Digital Media will prepare students to be educated backpack journalists and will equip students with the skills necessary to cover, photograph, video, edit and produce a complete media package.
Students will learn to create interesting and strong packages using various copy-writingtechniques paired with visual images/video. Students will expand their knowledge and vocabulary as it relates to journalism andphotography. Students will apply these new understandings toward creating original, strong, media packages that inform and or entertain the public.
Students will have the opportunity to use technology to explore information on basic camera partsand functions,basic video techniques post-processing techniques, and careers.
CLASS FEE:
Each semester there may be various things that arise that require a small fee. Please be prompt in paying your fees to avoid delays and unpaid charges to be charged to your bookstore account. Below are a few examples but not limited to:

Total Program Delivery Model:
In TUHSD, the Total Program Delivery Model within Career and Technical Education provides opportunities for students to not only receive academic classroom instruction within the CTE program/course they are enrolled, but to also engage daily in a hands-on, laboratory settings where industry standards and leadership development are key to the learning that goes on. Students in CTE courses are also highly encouraged to join the Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO) aligned to the program. In the Digital Communications program students will become affiliated members of aSkillsUSAchapter at their local high school.
Evaluation Procedures:
Students will receive points for completion of course requirements. The points earned during the semester will be added together and computed into a percentage. The semester grade is based on the quarter grades and the final exam grade. The percentage is given a letter grade according to the following scale.
All grades stand as is and are never rounded up to the next grade.
Grading Scale:
A -- 100-90% -- Mastered D -- 69-60% -- Approaching
B -- 89-80% -- Exceeded F -- 59-Below – Unattained
C -- 79-70% -- Attained
Grading will be calculated as follows:
Performance Assessments (DEADLINES): 50%
Participation OUTSIDE/INSIDE 20%
In Class Assignments: 20%
EOCA Final Exam: 10%
Make Up Work Procedure:
Students have five school days to make up work missed with an excused absence. Lectures will not be repeated and certain classroom activities cannot be repeated because of the nature of the activities. Students are responsible for getting make-up work from their instructor. Students must make prior arrangements with the instructor before make up work can be completed after school in the class labs. In addition, students will lose 10% credit for each day an assignment is late.
Make Up Performance Assessments:
Students will have the opportunity to make up performance assessments scheduled by appointment before or after school. Based on the specific performance assessment the student may be given an alternative research project to make up the missing performance assessments if the original performance assessment cannot be recreated.
Eligibility for Athletics and Club Participation:
EligibilityChecks will occur every 3 weeks.
ReinstatementChecks will occur every 1 week.
Checks will occur every Monday at 7:30 am.
Students failing a course at an ELIGIBILITY CHECK are out a minimum of 1 week and will become eligible if passing all classes at a REINSTATEMENT on the following Monday(s); Every Monday.
Weekly checks will promote good attendance, encourage daily participation, and require quick response time on missed/make-up work.
Classroom Policies:
  • Students are required to have their student ID with them at all times. Internet use requires a valid student ID at all times.
  • All appropriate district paperwork (Technology Agreement, Internet Users Agreement, etc.) must be on file with appropriate district personnel. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure this has been completed.
  • Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism and cheating are considered serious offenses and may result in failure on the assignment or exam in question, and a disciplinary referral. For more information, refer to these policies in the student handbook.
This classroom must be a safe learning environment for all.

This course emphasizes classroom and/or workplace hands-on learning. There is a potential risk in participating in these activities over the course of the year. Students will be instructed in safe laboratory procedures and all safety measures are required to be followed at all times. Safety equipment is provided and must be used by all students. The students in the La Joya Digital Media classes have been working hard learning about layout design, copy writing, digital camera techniques, and photo manipulation. They have taken many inspiring shots that we would like to showcase on the Montage Facebook Page. In order for your child’s work to be showcased on the site we need the form below completed and returned by Friday, August 18th, 2017.
