PalmerMiddle School Physical Education Procedures

Physical Education

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year. We feel that each student should experience a wide variety of activities and that positive attitudes should be developed through total participation. In addition, we believe the middle school program should emphasize physical fitness, and students should develop an understanding of lifetime fitness values. Finally, the middle school student should be exposed to current health issues so that rational decisions, which affect one’s health, can be made. Through these opportunities, we hope each student experiences success and will develop a positive self-concept, learns the importance of cooperation, sportsmanship, responsibility and teamwork, experiences significant physical, mental, emotional, and social growth.

Physical Education Dress:

  • Students will be required to “Dress Out” into a short-sleeved crewneck T-shirt and pull-on, elasticized shorts or pants. The PE clothes are the student’s responsibility and they should be taken home and washed once weekly on the weekend. PE Clothes improperly marked, ripped or damaged must be replaced. Sagging of the shorts or underwear showing is unacceptable. Students may only wear one pair of physical education shorts. Students may not wear their physical education clothes under their school clothes.
  • If physical education clothes are lost during the school year it is the students’ responsibility to check the physical education lost and found. If unable to find the student must bring other clothes. PE Clothes are not to be loaned to other students.
  • Sweats or long pants are strongly recommended for cold days. Sweatshirts can be worn when cold but should be layered over another shirt. Jackets, sweaters and jeans are not appropriate for physical education.
  • Athletic socks must be worn with athletic shoes. Shoes with cleats, boots, and shoes without laces are not allowed. Slip on shoes and untied shoespose a hazard during activity and are not allowed.
  • Jewelry including rings, necklaces, chains, bracelets, watches, earrings and other piercings are prohibited due to the safety risks they pose during a physical education class. The Physical Education Department is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

For the safety and well being of others’, we ask that only roll-on or stick deodorant (no aerosols) be used and that no glass bottles and cologne or perfume be brought in to the locker rooms.

Water bottles will be permitted outdoors only during class. At no time are students to bring water bottles into either the main gym or carpeted gym.

Locker Room Procedures and Expectations

All students will be issued a locker and a combination lock for storage of PE clothes and belongings specifically used for PE. Only school issued locks are permitted on lockers. Students will be required to keep their locker clean and locked at all times. Students are not allowed to share locks or lockers. Lockers of friends or siblings will NOT be opened. If a student loses a lock, the replacement cost will be $5.00. Check outside the PE office to see if a lost lock has been found.

Safety

  • No gum or candy in the locker room
  • No aerosol containers
  • No glass containers
  • No running or horseplay in the locker room
  • No cell phones or other electronic devices
  • No drink containers may enter the locker room

Excuses

A student unable to take part physically can participate by other means. They may judge, keep score, or be asked to do a written assignment. If a student is to be excused from class activities, a note written by a parent is required and must be given to the student’s PE teacher before class. The note must have the following:

  • Date
  • Reason for excuse
  • Number of days for excuse (up to 5)
  • Signature of parent or guardian
  • Phone number

A doctor’s note specifying the type if illness or injury and the nature and duration of the excuse are required when restricted or excused longer than five (5) consecutive days. Excuses should indicate what a student could do in order for the physical educator to modify instruction for that student. Students may be required to dress out.

Grading

As in other areas of the curriculum, participation is critical to learning in physical education. Effort is equally as important and more identifiable in an activity-oriented class. The grading policy in each teacher’s class allows for each student the opportunity to obtain a superior grade.

Students in Physical Education will receive an academic and conduct grade on their report card. Grades will be determined using the Cobb County School District guidelines.
