Scholarships in France

Is your dream to study in France or another francophone country but you’re not quite sure on how to finance the trip? Here are resources both in the Library collection and on the Web to help you find scholarships, grants and housing assistance during your studies.

Resources at the French Institute Alliance Française Library:

These handy guides (in both French and English) provide practical information on life in France, the French educational system, student jobs, housing, and visa requirements. These guides can be found in both the reference and circulating collections.

Provides the majority of scholarships to students in France. This is a list of several government-sponsored grants and scholarship options for university students:

The Minister of Higher Education in France lists several different resources on need-based and merit-based scholarships for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students.

§  Each major city in France has its own CROUS. Contact your region’s CROUS to get more information on scholarship opportunities in your area. The Paris site has general information on steps towards acquiring a scholarship in France

The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s site has information about funding from UNESCO as well as links to several other grant possibilities.

§  Helps to fund ages 18 to 30 in creating and carrying through a project related to arts, science, social sciences and a variety of other domains.

Undergraduate to Post-Doctorate funding including the Phi Beta Kappa Walter J. Jensen Fellowship, the Rotary World Peace Fellowship and the Embassy of France Teaching Assistantship Program.

§  Fulbright Scholarships http://us.fulbrightonline.org/about.html

Fulbright Scholarship is funded by the U.S. Department of State in order to foster a multicultural understanding. There are grants for study and research as well as a teaching assistantship program.

Centres Internationaux Francophones des Lions Clubs de France http://www.amicif.fr

Offers a free 3-week stay in one of their affiliated schools in France for students 18-35. (only the cost of air fare is undertaken by the student) Must already have a good level of French.

Subject-Specific funding

§  Here you will find a list of scholarship opportunities and grants for students and researchers in various scientific domains. This includes the Chateaubriand fellowship as well as information on University endowment programs among other opportunities.

§  The Camargo Foundation http://www.camargofoundation.org/

§  Located in Cassis, France. An interdisciplinary and multicultural residential center for scholars pursuing studies in the humanities, arts and social sciences related to French and francophone cultures. It provides a stipend for study for its students.

§  The ERCIM Alain Bensoussan Fellowship Programme http://www.ercim.org/activity/fellows/index.html

§  For those holding a PhD wishing to research in the field of Mathematics or Information Technology.

Financial Aid for Housing

▪ Centre National des Œuvres Universitaires (CNOUS) http://www.en.cnous.fr/_vie_33.htm

Explains the different types of housing grants allocated through the Caf in English.

▪ Caisse national des Allocations Familiales (CAF) www.caf.fr

The Caf grants need-based housing subsidization. This organization will help lower your rent, even if you are not a student.

Scholarship opportunities outside of Metropolitan France

This site, based out of Foreign Affaires and International Trade Canada has links to scholarship opportunities provided by both the Canadian and American governments for study and research in Canada.

§  L’Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie http://www.auf.org/actions/bourse-mobilite/accueil.html

Provides funding for masters, doctorate and post-doctorate students wishing to study and do research abroad in francophone countries.
