Source and Summit 2011
Nourished by the Eucharist
REC & Liturgy Coordinators Conference
February 23-24, 2011
‘It is the intense desire of God to enter into the most intimate relationship with us that forms the core of the Eucharistic celebration and the Eucharistic life. God not only wants to enter human history by becoming a person who lives in a specific epoch and a specific country, but God wants to become our daily food and drink at any time and any place. Therefore Jesus takes bread, blesses it, and gives it to us. And then, as we see the bread in our hands and bring it to our mouths to eat it, yes, then our eyes are opened and we recognize him.
(Henri J. Nouwen © 1994 ‘With Burning Hearts – A Meditation on the Eucharistic Life’)
Introduction
Source and Summit 2011 is designed to provide a rich experience for exploring the changes to the Roman Missal within a broader context of liturgical formation. It has specific links with the Diocesan Pastoral Plan and the CEO School Review and Improvement processes:
§ 2011 Actions and Strategies: Focus on our Mass, our Mission, our World
Goal B: Our celebration of the Mass will be an uplifting experience of the community at prayer and worship.
§ Key Area 1: Catholic Life and Religious Education
Strategic Intent: 1.1 Catholic Schools are identifiably Catholic
1.1.1 Schools supported in demonstrating a rich Catholic culture in liturgy, prayer, symbols and practice.
The conceptual framework for Source and Summit 2011 is based on an understanding that when we gather to celebrate the Eucharist, we do more than say words and recite formulas. To celebrate the Eucharist means to ‘do’ something, to engage in action, to participate in a shared endeavour to carry out the command of Christ who said, ‘Do this in memory of me’. What we do in the Eucharist through words, gestures, signs and symbols ‘is to experience anew for our sakes and our salvation what has been handed on to us from the apostolic church – our privileged participation in Christ’s paschal mystery.’ (Rev Mon Kevin Irwin © 2010, International Committee on English in the Liturgy)
The Church lives from the Eucharist. Its celebration is integral to and integrative of the whole Christian life. As the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy so boldly asserts, ‘the liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the church is directed; it is also the source from which all its power flows.’ (CSL n10) Gathered to celebrate Eucharist, the central act of our salvation, the Church community receives nourishment for its life and mission.
Underpinning the conference is the hope and invitation to deepen our understanding of the Eucharist in our lives.
Focus
§ Exploring parts of the Mass and aspects of the new translation of the Roman Missal.
§ Reflecting on what we do when we gather round the table of the Word and the table of the Eucharist for worship.
§ Crafting the art of Eucharistic liturgy in a prayerful, informative and practical way.
§ Responding to the call to ‘go forth’ and live the mission of the gospel in our daily lives.

Conference Format
Keynotes
What we pray and what we believe shapes how we live. Christians gather to celebrate the Eucharist and are then sent forth to live what they have celebrated.
Keynote 1: ‘We are Gathered’ will explore aspects of why we gather, the nature of liturgy, the role of the assembly and what we bring to the liturgy.
Keynote 2: ‘We are Sent’ will explore aspects of what it means to be sent forth, our mission to live what we have celebrated, and the challenge of living a eucharistic life.
Workshops
Workshop A.1, B.1, C.1: Singing the Mass Fr Sean Cullen & Anne Field
Singing the liturgy is one of the most basic and powerful means of being the assembly in prayer. This workshop will look at the use of music in the liturgy through engaging with the texts and melodies for the new Mass setting.
Workshop A.2, B.2, C.2: Praying the Mass Fr Richard Healey
The Eucharistic prayer is the centre and culmination of the whole Mass. It is a prayer of thanksgiving and sanctification. This workshop will focus on praying the Eucharistic prayer and explore the new Mass texts of the liturgy including the Greeting and the Collect.
The workshops will be run three times over the two days allowing everyone access to three out of the four workshops on offer.
Workshop A.3, B.3, C.3: Serving the Worshipping Community Pat O’Gorman
The assembly at prayer is a multiform gathering, enabled and served by a diversity of ministries. This workshop will explore different liturgical ministries and how these ministries can be exercised in a way that best enables the worshipping community to pray the liturgy.
Workshop A.4, B.4, C.4: Sacred Signs of the Liturgy Fr Elio Capra /Fr David Catterall
The Eucharist is an ensemble of rites, words, gestures and actions that, taken together, engage us in God and the things of God in a particular and unique way. This workshop will explore some of the key symbols of the liturgy including bread and wine, Word and Table.
