GROUP ACTIVITIES
A: Group Improvisation Exercise (discussion on ‘Assertive’ and ‘Responsive’ traits and gestures).
Timescale – 30 minutes.
-Send a small group of 3 or 4 students out of the room (Group A).
-The rest of the group (Group B) take on what they initially perceive to be ‘assertive’ or ‘responsive’ characteristics.
-Group A return to the room and interact with Group B and begin to ask questions to ascertain whether they are being assertive or responsive.
-Move this exercise through different possibilities and levels of assertive and responsive e.g. b y asking ‘What if we are assertive to the females and responsive to the males?’
-Ask ‘Can we change the scenario to different places of work?’
B. Work And Home Flashmob Exercise.
Timescale – 15 minutes.
  • This activity allows students to think about the way they portray themselves physically at home and at school and in the workplace.
  • Discuss the differences and demonstrate some examples as a group.
  • Students are asked to go ‘over the top’ in their responses and then to tone down behaviour, looking at the various levels in between.

C. ‘Raffa Raffa’ Exercise.
Timescale – 30 minutes.
-Split the group into 2 sections (two islands).
-Group A’s rules are:
(i)to welcome everyone with a handshake
(ii)to never look each other in the eye
-Group B’s rules are:
(i)to shrug as a welcome
(ii)to appear responsive to questions
  • Ambassadors from each island are sent across to the neighbouring island and need to work out what the greeting rule is and what the additional rule is.
  • If they break any of the island’s rules, they are immediately sent off by the king and expected to begin again.
This activity looks at observation of behaviour, adapting your own behaviour to suit a particular environment and asking questions to ascertain what is acceptable in you new environment. Follow up with group discussion.
