RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Student Researcher. Department of Neurosurgery UIHC, Iowa City, IA 2010
· Project: To determine the benefits of bone morphogenetic protein in occipitocervical fusion in pediatric patient and report on the associated complications.
· Principal Investigator: Arnold Menezes, M.D.
· This is a retrospective study looking at BMP in OC fusion in pediatric patients. Instability across the occipitocervical junction is difficult to fuse due to the intrinsic factors in pediatric patients. BMP has been affective in increasing arthodesis in spinal fusion. We therefore attempt to determine if there is benefit of BMP in OC fusion in pediatric patient and to report on complications.

· Project: To determine if Polyetheretherketone rods are protective against increased motion and intradiscal pressure adjacent to instrumentations.
· Principal Investigator: Patrick Hitchon, M.D.
· Increased motion in adjacent vertebrae after instrumentation and increased intradiscal pressure are proposed to cause expeditied degeneration changes. We attempted to determine whether PEEK rods were protective against increased motion and intradiscal pressure. Cadaveric spines were used to for posterior fusion and displacment was carried out with an MTS machine. We recorded the intradiscal pressure in adjacent disc spaces and motion analysis in intact, instrumented with PEEK Rods and instrumented Titanium Rods.

Case Report of Combined Hypertensive Cerebellar and Supratentorial Hemorrhage. 2010
Department of Neurosurgery UIHC Iowa City, IA
· Project: To report the outcome of care of two patients who presented with combined cerebellar and supratentorial hemorrhage.
· Principal investigator: Nader S. Dahdaleh, M.D.
· Two patients presenting with combined cerebellar and supratentorial hemorrhage were treated surgically and medically for intraparenchymal hemorrhage. Patients were taken to the operating room and underwent posterior fossa decompression and medical management for the supratentorial hemorrhage. We reported and significant improvement in survival of these patients compared to reported outcomes.

Case Report of Intramural Aortic Hematoma. Department of Surgery Methodist Hospital 2009
Des Moines Iowa
· Project: To report the care of a patient with Type A Aortic Intramural Hematoma
· Principal investigator: Matsuura John, M.D.
· The care of patients with Type A intramural aortic hematoma is still debated. In this case report we present a patient with Type A intramural aortic hematoma who was treated with surgical repair with endovascular stents, and the outcome.

· Project: Determining the need for somatosensory evoked potential monitors during cervical decompression.
· Principal Investigator: Vincent C. Traynelis, M.D.
· This was a retrospective study to determine if somatosensory evoked potential are necessary for cervical decompression. Data for this study was obtained from the medical records of all patients involved in the study. The pre-op deficit was quantified along with the post-op results.
· Abstract accepted for oral presentation at AANS meeting, publication
Student Researcher. Department of Trauma Surgery (UIHC). Iowa City, IA. 2008
· Project: Determine the efficacy of different surgical techniques and material.
· Principal Investigator: Kent Choi, M.D.
· This was a retrospective study to determine which surgical technique was best for ventral hernia repair. Data for this study was obtained from the medical records of all patients involved in the study, this was then entered it into an analytic database. The information was used to determine recurrence rate for ventral hernia repair in comparison to the different surgical technique and material used.
